... cold beer. Nate if your are reading this, please add the picture our send it to me ! Tomorrow we have a choice, boat ride up the Douro river, or ride to our next stop in Terreiro. About half doing either, I'm riding, Leslie is boating. It's our "leg breaker day". Not sure what the issue is , only 90k, and 1650m in climbing. Lots of ups and downs, the climbs are shorter than we have had, just steeper. Hummm .... Will let you know how it goes ... No beer, mid ride .... ...

... that we were on 'holidays'. We laid around, slept, read, played chess, drank wine and port and ate chocolate. And for the record, I beat Pito with a stalemate. It was lovely. Exploring the valley was also a treat. Driving through the terraced vineyards on what could only be called the most windy, zig-zaggy, labyrinth of roads was an experience in itself. It was great to see a group of local residents using one of the cloisters to rehearse a play. Leaving the village of about 800 people our GPS tried to take us further up the hill on what looked like a local goat track so we declined and retraced our route back to Lamego and on to Porto.

... for an overnight stay in the Douro River valley. Thank goodness we had air conditioning since for part of the trip the outside temperature reached 35 C (95 F). Along the way, we stopped in the little town of Amarante to visit the Sao Goncalo Monastery. The monastery stands near the river and bridge in a pleasant square surrounded by white granite houses. The church has a very unusual dome covered with red tiles. This beautiful church and monastery ...

The ship left Porto this morning before we were even out of bed. It was a lazy morning as we started our 350 mile trip on the Douro River. It is not a very wide river so it was easy to see both shores. We spent most of the morning on the sun deck lounging on chairs and watching the world go by- a few small villages with trees lining the shore and the hills beyond. We had to travel through two locks which were part of the hydroelectric plants ...
