... and the beginnings of what we saw on this day are hard to trace with certainty.

Leaving the town square, we passed the impressive facade of the church and headed down into the vineyards. The day was fine, and rays of morning sun back lit the foliage of the grapes brilliantly in hues of green and yellow, red and orange. The panoramas changed as we walked, hillsides opposite us clothed in rows of fall-colored vineyards, then ...

A wee bit of sunshine this morning but still quite cloudy. The weather the past few days has been cooler and wetter than normal. The locals say it has been a poor summer and now especially with the harvesting of the grapes- rain is not a good thing. We drove some very twisty and narrow roads. searched our way- some of the villages were too small for the GPS system to find, so we had to go by internal ...

We took the train from just down the street from us and travelled along the Douro to Ferradosa a small village on the river. Train trip was about 11/2 hours and cost 13.20E round trip each. When we arrived, we searched and found the one restaurant in the village and as we were lagging behind Rob, the lady of the restaurant came and picked us up in her car. We shared a meal of ...

Had a late start today- not on the road until noonish. Stopped briefly in a Internet cafe, but had to linger due to a storm passing through. Thunder and lightning show. Had to have 2 coffees. From there we drove to a vineyard- Quinta de Passcala .It is owned by Taylor's but produces Fonseca Port. We watched the men stomping the grapes and chatted with a university student that told us they ...

      Yes, THAT Mateus

The bus trip up the hill today took us to the town of Vila Real, site of the extraordinary Mateus Palace - the building depicted on the Mateus wine labels. Remember when we thought we were so sophisticated, drinking this pink bubbly stuff?

I was here on my first trip to Portugal many years ago. (So you won't be surprised to hear that it only looked vaguely familiar.) I don't think the baroque-style country home built ...
