Port in Porto

... a wonderful little hostel called Downtown Porto and booked a room. We were the only ones at the hostel so we had the run of the place which was pretty fun. The place was really nice with a huge living room and kitchen. They even had satellite TV so while Chris worked away on Frackingfree, I had some good FOX reruns of Buffy and Bones. We didn’t do much that day besides catch up on some computer stuff and eat. But the eating is something to talk about ...

Porto, asleep by the river.

... a meal, and then turning in. The hostel was one of the nicer places I've stayed. It's a very large 3 story house that's been converted to a hostel, but completely maintains the feel of a big old house. The setting really promoted the mingling of the people in the hostel, which was great because it was a pretty diverse crowd.

Porto itself is quite a nice place. It's very much what it wants to be, and nothing more. You get that feeling sometimes when a city ...

Our meals were : a tuna salad (a can of tuna, unrippened tomatoes and lettuce) and pork (a peice of pork, rice and french fries.) Long story short we were more then enthusiastic to get on the road in the morning to leave Porto behind

... port wine tasting for a couple of hours including a tour of one company. They explain the process of making port and then you get to have a taste of a couple. Others you have to pay to taste.

So, all in all, it´s been great. We´d love to come back again but there´s Sicily, Croatia, Prague, Turkey, S/west India all in the queue.

Cheers

Ryanair - For my airline friends

... a flight on them would be like. To be honest, the walk was a nice way to stretch out my legs after having my knees touching the hard plastic in front of me. But hey, for $8 I am not going to complain. I got EXACTLY what I paid for and went into it expecting nothing. The flight crews were amazingly nice though and you can't put a pricetag on that. Yes, this is the Ryanair travel experience that only €1 plus a €5 ripoff booking fee buys. Priceless.

A visit to the beach

... any longer so we paid our bill and then walked along the beach, then along the promenade. Waves were crashing on a breakwater that had some sort of lighthouse at the end so we decided to investigate. We went right out to the end and stood watching waves crashing far below us, throwing pillars of spume high into the air, up to 3 metres above us. It was exhilarating and because the wind was blowing in the right direction we could stand right beside this curtain of ...

The Faded Grandeur of Porto

... and sun, sun, sun. When we touched down in Porto, the northernmost city in Portugal and the second largest in the country, there was a thick mantle of fog which reminded us more of London mornings. We checked into our newly inaugurated hostel, the B&W Porto Hostel whose 19th century family-house-turned-into-a-stylish-hip- hostel accommodated ...
