Big City Cheeelay.

Santiago - the capital and financial engine of near first world Chile (population 5mil.). Once at the main bus terminal we headed to the Metro for a ride towards the city centre of the Lonsdres neighborhood. Thoughout our stay in town the Metro made getting around quick, easy, and cheap. First impressions of the city: modern, clean, expensive, and with significantly lighter skin toned inhabitants. There is also a very strong mall culture with mall after mall in the city centre. The city was a...

New arrival in Santiago!

Got our flight last night from Quito to Santiago which was a lot shorter than we thought so sleeping tablets were probably slightly wasted! Arrived early and had a few hours to wait for our new arrival, Dave´s dad, Tony fresh from London via Toronto. Before he arrived we had a frantic search for beer, champagne or wine to welcome him from his flight but can you believe that none of the cafes had any available so we had to make up for it later obviously. Great to see him after 9 months and doe...

Santiago

Well I am finally back where it all started, where I first touched down in South America. Santiago. Man its cool here. I mean a typical big city, lots of people, noise and unfortunately the pollution here is bad, the streets are pretty clean but the air is thick of smog, not nice in the middle of the day but you can escape to all these parks around the place and they are like little havens of fresh air!. So am staying at the Residencial Londres, in this wee intersection of Paris Calle and Lon...

In Santiago

On our final day in Pucon we hired bikes. There was a 40km round trip recommended to us which involved 20km generally uphill offroad to see some waterfalls and then 20km generally downhill on tarmac back into Pucon. The journey up was hard work, especially not really knowing if we were going the right was for a lot of the time. Plus the bikes werent in the best condition and Kat's chain kept slipping off. Eventually though we reached our destination and the waterfalls and lagoon really were q...

Santiago de Chile

Thank you Sky Airline of Chile !!! What should be an 30+ hours (2 nights 1 day) bus ride from Arica to Santiago turn out to be an three and a half hour flight. There was a promotion fare from Arica to Puenta Arenas (US$230 one way), which we happily took it without hesitation. This saves us the torture bus ride as well as 4 days of travelling. Of course to get the promocion fare, we had to stop in Santiago de Chile. We arrived at the modern airport in Santiago around 11am, took the shuttle bu...

Santiago Seconds

I was lucky enough to be here three years ago on a short trip visiting my brother who was teaching English to the penguins of Punta Arenas at that time. Actually that`s not right. Now I recall it was the arctic seals that needed help with their vocab and grammar; the penguins having always been good linguists. That trip had finished just days before I first met Rachel at a lunch and it meant I had something to talk about other than that week`s chess problems. Obviously my sparkling patter abo...

Adios from Santiago

Well it is just about the end of the trip and i have mixed feelings about going home! For starters, im currently in Santiago, the capital of Chile. I came being quite optimistic about the city, despite the bad/boring reviews i`d heard. But really, Santiago is a lame excuse for a capital city with 7 million people. Actually, all the backpackers that come through the hostel all try to figure out one question: how exactly 7 million people live ...

Touchdown in Santiago

... seemingly close. Orion just fitted in my window. The tour leader has just given us all a thorough briefing about everything that is scheduled to happen and the additional things we can do. I can tell you, there will not be too much relaxation time! But lots to see and great range of climate and scenery and wildlife. This afternoon we went with another couple on a brief exploration of nearby surroundings, we went to a large park and ...

For a good time, call ...

... will stay. I don´t think a single guy would turn down the hotel once they saw her! She could even quote some outrageous price for this slightly run-down place, and they would still stay! And come to think of it ... after seeing this employee, I no longer think this place is slightly run-down. In fact, I think it´s worthy of being classified as 5-star. I wonder why I´ve suddenly changed my mind ... But in all seriousness, it makes sense ...
