... of the crossing - there was a big party on the pool deck and a countdown by the Captain from the Bridge - he blew the ships horn and everyone had a lot of fun - it was kind of like New Year's Eve. We met a very nice couple from Brazil in the Concierge Lounge and they have supplied us with a list of restaurants near where we will be staying in Sao Paulo - they also gave us their cell phone numbers as he is a lawyer ...
Mindelo, Cape Verde jimstephkrueger... barely got off of the pier when Jim said he was ready to go back - but we continued on. We saw a Shell plant and then ran across the convenience store - well that looked familiar enough. There were a lot of very thin stray dogs roaming around and that was sad to see. There were quite a few kids begging for money and a lot of guys selling beaded necklaces and 'paintings' made from sand. Apparently from what we heard ...
Mindelo, Cape Verde jimstephkrueger... and was very proud of myself. Somehow, I think the local people half-expected to bargain. Most foodstuff are generally expensive for the local living standards...almost the same or more expensive than in France...perhaps it's because everything is imported here....not much fertile land for agriculture. Only seafood remains inexpensive.. 3 EUR for a medium size red snapper! Here are more photos of the city. Enjoy!
Mindelo, Cape Verde ccheng... up with the cousins of Michael and Jennis, the american couple I met in Barcelona by chance, yesterday at the marina. I thought I recognised the name of their catamaran, SCUD. It was a nice surprise to meet them here. They left this morning for the Carribean. We will be leaving tomorrow for Barbados. Till then, keep a lookout on this blog! The voyage is expected to last at least 20 days, if we're lucky enough to have winds of 5 miles per hour everyday.
Mindelo, Cape Verde ccheng... On devrait jeter l'encre vers 3h.
Mindelo, Cape Verde ccheng... so far...the first time, Greg let it escape by mistake. The 2nd time, we decided that it was too ugly to eat it so we put it back into the water. Talk about saved by the skin! The 3rd time, we found it at the end of the line too late...it was all disfigured by the time we pull it up. We threw it back into the water. In an attempt to improve our chances of catching a fish, Phil added a weight from his diving equipment to the line. At around 4 pm, Eddy noticed that we had something on ...
(In English) We spotted a sailboat! From far, it seems to be heading for us. It was a Danish sailboat, Expresso. We think that they're also heading for Cape Verde, but they're travelling much faster than us ...
Mindelo, Cape Verde ccheng... we were treated to tribal dance of dolphins in the horizon. There must have been around 30 of them, one leaping after the other. They reminded me of the scene in Lion King, where all the animals gathered to meet their new king. I quietly wished for them to approach, but they didn't. 10 minutes before my night shift, Eddy woke me up to alert me of the dolphins. There were maybe 2-3 of them. Streaks of green line criss-crossing decorated the sides of the boat.
Mindelo, Cape Verde ccheng... a better look and it squirted water at him. Being a beginner at fishing, we didn't know what to do with it. We put it in a pail of water and waited for Phil to deal with it. When he turned up for his shift, he was pleasantly surprised to see the calamari. Thinking it was still alive, we discussed on the ways to kill the calamari... bang its head? Stab it? After we went to bed, I heard Phil in the kitchen chopping. He told us it was already dead by then. How convenient.
