Sine Saloum Delta

Really long time since my my last entry! sorry!
Went travelling down the coast all the way to Toubakouta to visit the Sine Saloum Delta with some other volunteers. Started off on Monday the 1st, travelled to Dakar to stay for one night in an apartment, cooked for ourselves which made a nice change! Then got a good nights sleep ready for the big day of travelling on Tuesday. The first part of the trip ...

... and consequences of industrialization and especially its effects on children, I had to stop myself from laughing aloud with excitement. Without a word from Jennie or I they were pushing the discussion further, keeping it on topic, building on each other's comments, and making summative conclusions. College classrooms full of American kids who've had the Socratic style drilled into them since middle school, who've expressed their views to the point of arrogance for years couldn't do ...

... how powerful they are. He told me about the GAFSA project and his training trips to the UK. The engine in question had attended a bush fire the night before and sustained a bump to the rear after falling into a hole. Nothing a bit of panel beating couldn't fix. Whoosh.. the wind behind me blew me to Basang. A small town where I stopped for some snack provisions. I was beckoned over to join the shop keepers family meal of ...

mosquitos: 2 smcm: 0

I planned on being able to write a journal entry about trips to Brikama and Banjul I wanted to take this weekend. But instead I'm forced to write it about a West African hospital, where I spent most of my weekend staying with my good friend Bryan, who became the second member of our group to fall prey to the mosquitoes. Somehow, though we've all been keeping up with our anti-malarial medication, we've managed to triple the number of SMCM students who've gotten Malaria here. I guess ...

10 ridiculous things a day

... though a muddy street, past a cemetery, car repair shop, children screaming "tubab, tubab," donkeys, sheep, goats and even vultures. It looks as if we will have at least 5-10 other Gambians in our classes, though hopefully more will show up on Monday. I assume there are many things we'll have to get used to, beyond just the accents of our professors, but I'm thrilled about the idea of the different perspectives we'll be exposed to. Preparing for the semester and discussing coming ...

Birding Confessions

... we were wandering around Senegal he pointed out various feathered creatures as I feigned disinterest with decreasing success. By the time we returned to The Gambia, it was I who reached for the BirdBook to look up the species we'd seen. Since then, I haven't been able to shake it off. Even just walking down my street, I find myself stopping to ogle every flap in every tree. It's like a disease. Does anybody know of a cure?

Senegal and Gambia

Hope Christmas was successful, you've all eaten and drunk far too much and you're now making plans to lose all the weight you put on in the last couple of weeks! At our last update we were just preparing to enter Senegal through a notoriously bad border crossing and we mentioned 2 Frenchmen in the 2CV trying to get to Dakar, but being shipped off on the back of a breakdown lorry. You'll be pleased to hear that 1) the crossing was reasonably pain free and not too ...
