... surfers, but I would not have liked being out in a small boat fishing! The weather picked up over the bank holiday weekend - it's a holiday in France too. We have had patches of lovely warm sunshine, but most of the time there has been a wind. It comes off the lake and has a cutting edge to it. Our next planned stop was an aire at La Breole. It was a building site. The commune were putting up a building and had fenced off part of the aire for access ...

... at how soft the snow was- just like Fairy floss. We drove on towards Grenoble and then Gap where we were staying the night. We drove through the most amazing picturesque scenery. Towering mountains and old fortresses either side as we moved along the valleys. Just stunning.

The hotel we stayed in was in a good location with the host being very friendly, he reminded us of Gabriel Gate. Gap was a gorgeous little town easily explored by foot from just outside the hotel.

... towards Grenoble we got caught in a terrific hailstorm! So much for looking for sun.

After Grenoble we headed off into The mountains on the D85 - the Route Napoleon - the route Napoleon took in March 1815 after he left Elba and arrived on the south coast of France. Only we were doing the route in the ...

    High Passes and Route Napoleon

... high passes. There are so many passes signposted around here I am only just nibbling around the edges.

The challenging pass has a glorious smooth ride up and down again but at the summit the road deteriorates badly and runs over a series of deep water gullies, though they are dry at this time of year. Definitely rip the sump off quite a few low-sling sports cars though.
