... has Charlemagne living here briefly, in 800AD, to establish the monastery, and reputedly marking out the hills with his buttocks. The walk around the village is the Pied de Charlemagne, literally, his footsteps.

Finally, locals take kindly to our attempts at French, humouring us and filling in the gaps where even a Franglais word won't suffice.

... it. I took another side road and drove through what appeared to be groves of bamboo until I came to a larger bridge under the main road where I could fit. The new site is very large, mostly consists of cabins but has a few touring pitches. I was the only person on the touring pitches though there seem to be some people living in the cabins (some of them I think are living there permanently). Left Barcelona by train early afternoon, of course it's the most glorious sunny warm day in Barcelona, typical! The train station was a bit of a nightmare of course nothing in English and the metro and the trains seem to all be in the same building but different parts of it all the platforms are labelled from 1 to whatever, so would be handy to read Spanish so you were clear as to whether you were on a train platform or a metro platform in the end it was the baggage scanner ...

... The ride up the Col was horrendous, gravel for road where the road surface had been lifted and such tight winding bends (on a bike on gravel, not nice). It was however beautiful and interesting to see ski resorts closed (and some butters skiing down really skanky snow). ... and it was really interesting to see the set up of the old town inside the castle walls, once protecting the people of the village from their enemies. After Chris thoroughly checked out the chocolate and nougat shop, we headed back to our accommodation where mum and I cooked a delicious pasta meal and salad for the boys while we watched the Olympic opening ceremony, which was a little disappointing.
