Historical Traveler Reviews Residence Suites Oia
Residence Suites - my review
Just returned from a 4 night stay at residence suites and would review as follows:
Fantaastic location - Oia is amazing and this hotel is in the best part of the village
View-great view of the Caldera
Terrace - is nice and pool and jacuzzi were lovely. Small but fine
Rooms not all the same - the first room i was put in was horrible. I booked this place on the assumption that the photos on the website represented the style of the rooms whilst appreciating they might differ slightly. Well the first room was musty, dark, full of dark furntiture and creepy. This is not what i expected having fallen for the bright white pinks and oranges on the website. That said I got moved and the second room was fantastic. If I had been there from day one i would have been delighted with my room
Service - run by 18,19 and 20 year old dutch students. Whilst the girls were nice they simply do not have the experience. This is obviously not their fault., They are tourism students learning their trade.. they are simply learning. I dont think its fair the owners take over 200 euros a night for what is billed as an exclusive hotel and then leave the running of it to students who understandably are out there to party and have the time of their lives. Which they do. I felt ripped off. They werent equipped to run this place and they shouldnt have been put in this position with no supervision. I dont want to hear about how the one member of staff running the hotel on one particular day hasnt been to bed yet from being out partying. I dont want to hear staff arguing on the phone. I dont want to find 2 members of staff (opposite sex)sitting chatting by the pool on the terrace outside my room when i get in. i dont want to find out my transfer isnt arranged and despite being told it was included in the price now i have to pay for it. i dont want to hear other guests complain all day which they often did as photos on website are a bit misleading as it seems all rooms are not of the same potrayed on website. I have stayed in hotels all over the word from hostels to conde naste 5 and 6 star leading hotels of the world and the service was not in line with the hotel or price. And Im pretty relaxed about these things.
Breakfast - poor - fruit juices were diluted syrups not fresh juice and no fruit or yoghurt. cold croissant and bread and some tea or coffee.
Sun loungers - most were broken
Despite above, location and sheer beauty of place plus the nicer room left me with a great feeling for this place. But would I return? Yes if they sort out the staff/service. This is not repeat not a "slick" hotel. Owners have made a huge faux paus. The money they save on wages will be less than what they lose on lack of return business and bad reviews.
ps the website designers and photographers deserve a medal
PPS to the hotel :
Upgrade your musty dark rooms with some ikea furniture and linen/cushions and other bright items to ensure ALL rooms are at least of comparable and similar style to each other and your website photos, replace your broken sun loungers, include fruit and yoghurt in your breakfast and use fresh fruit juices even if from cartons, instill some permanent staff supervision, perhaps get a hammock down on the terrace with some lanterns and fairy lights and hey presto you have spent less than £5k and trust me you'll make a fortune. this hotel has got so much going for it but s being ruined but small things that are so simple to fix that i have an urge to give up my legal career and become a hotel adviser person just to fix it!
Do not be fooled!
The internet pictures and website make the place look like a luxury oasis. It is not. Unless you stay in the honeymoon "suite", it is no use staying here. The suite offers a fantastic view, but the room itself is regular. Some in our party stayed in a regular studio. Their deck was facing a wall.
What the website doesn't tell you is that this place is run by a company called Ecorama Tours. They are very disorganized. They do not answer your emails. You get different answers from every person regarding your stay. For example, one person told us that our car rental was reserved, and that all we had to do was come the next day. We stopped by the office at the end of the day to re-confirm this with her. The next day, the company had no record of our reservation. Another worker at the desk said that we should have given a downpayment and recieved a voucher to reserve the car. How were we supposed to know?
Ecorama tours employs people who do not speak the local language and have no local connection. They have no idea about the ferry schedule (our Mykonos hotel had to arrange our Santorini pick-up). All their documentation is on little scraps of paper. They are a group of girls running around with blindfolds on...and any problem encountered is either your fault or someone else's. They have no accountabillity. Yet they charge you a hefty price for this terrible experience. Stay away from this place!!!!!
Wonderful Hotel, beautifully decorated to the smallest detail. The staff are extremely friendly and more than willing to share information and tips on the area.
The best place to come back to and relax after enjoying a fun day exploring santorini!
Beware! Misleading site, horrible service
I looked at the site and I liked what I saw, so I booked 2 rooms from the internet. The honeymoon suite and 1 bedroom-suite.
Good Things: The honeymoon suite was very nice (like the photo in the site), but it didn't have some basic things that i would expect from a 211euro suite. The satelite TV didn't work (it had some porn movies to see on the DVD!!) and the bathroom was poor in little things (shower, towels etc).
Bad things: The 1 bedroom-suite (178euro) was a disaster. At first they gave as a suite (a lot of stares down the cliff) with terrible view and a tiny balkony. I suppose that someone goes to Oia mainly to watch the view. After we complained, they offered another one which was higher in thw cliff and it had the bedroom in the 2nd floor. The roof in both floors was about 1.90m to 2.0m high. If you are not a dwarf, this one was feeling like a prison. As a conclusion both rooms were overrated. I would thing that both rooms should be at least 50-70 euros cheaper.
Hot stuff: First of all the swimming pool. The size of the pool (??) was about 1.0X2.0m. The only use of it is to cool your feet as you are reading a book (see the photo). Most of the photos in the site are from the SPA which is somewhere in the village and is not included in the price. The second thing to mention is the service. There is no such thing as a kitchen, or a bar or something else. You can't even have a glass of water (cold coffee is out of the question). Most of the stuff is 18-20 years old Dutch students who don't know anything, can't help you with anything and are always absent. Conclusion. 1) Dont believe the site 2) If you go, take the honeymoon suite and some botllle of water, but dont expect much 3) Complain for all the bad things. In our case they couldnt stand our complaints and they send us to Oia Mare Hotel which is very very good.
Enjoyed Residence Suites
Located off the cliffs of Oia this little hotel (5-6 rooms) run by Ecorama was very good. After seeing other accomodations in Oia, the price ranges from 150 to 350+ for very similar rooms. Our room was a main single room (cave like dwelling) painted white, with the worlds smallest kitchen (yet managable). We had a couch, and bed also in this area. Everything was very clean, and nice. Our "shared" patio offered a great view of the sea, and the hot tubs offered similar views. Highly recommended (especially for the price, where everything is very expensive) and we would return. Friendly staff (currently tourism students from the Netherlands).
Whay you see is not what you get...
We booked this hotel using Expedia (first mistake). A week before leaving we got an email from Expedia that the price was almost twice as much as we were originally quoted. (Long story) Our first stop after seeing the room was to an Internet cafe to double check that we were indeed staying in the right place! I know that ad photos are always better than the real thing but the difference was amazing (see photo of bathroom). It's true that the views and sunsets were awesome but I think we were expecting too much from the hotel (second mistake). I know, I know - another spoiled American complaining about not enough pampering and marble at a hotel but believe me for $300 a night for a single room you'd expect more too. The pool is very small (4 ' X 6 ') and the Jacuzzi needed cleaning. In the opinion of my observant 5 year old the place was "creepy" because the room was dug out of the side of the cliff and the rooms resembled caves. Definitely unique! We stayed 2 nights in this hotel and were happy to be checking out and moving on to our next hotel (Andromeda in Imerovigli - awesome!!!).
Residence Suites in Oia , Santorini

The rooms and the view were awesome!!!!!! The keepers of the roome were extremely nice and catered to all our needs. There are stairs involved so be aware you have to be pretty mobile in order to get around. But you are close to all the action, fantastic sunsets and many restaurants. Not too far from buses and taxi's. I recommend this place and hope to get back next year!!
We stayed at the residence suites during our stay in Oia. The hotel was terrific, and we had a great location on the cliff. We stayed in a room which was very clean an modern. The hotel also offerd a good continental breakfast in the morning. It was at the very center of Oia.Stunning view on the volcanic island with a cosy outdoor jacuzzi.
We had a very lovely stay and we will be back next year!
