He is buried there, and his wonderful works decorate the beautiful church, which is set well away from the main tourist track. Today we set out reasonably early for a trip to Murano (glass making island) and Burano (island further out in the lagoon noted for brightly coloured houses and lace making. I followed the hoards through St Marks hoping to get a look at St. Roch's femur, St. Mark's sarcophagus and St. George's arm as well as the magnificent mosaics. Evidently the wily Venetians smuggled St. Mark's body out of Turkey in a barrel of fat. Obviously the Muslims wanted to hold onto his body! Who knows why?
