A Day (or two) in the Life of Benita

... away. But nothing can deter Anna from the chance to shop, apparently. After a day of doing essentially nothing we arrive home to a nice fire, a warm place to sit and naturally watch football (soccer).
Today sang a different tune, I woke to glamorous blue skies, the sun that just warms your soul when you step out into it, and it appeared to me that I had the house to myself, as Zio was at work, Zia out, and the other two kids most likely dreaming their dreams ...

Back to the Roots

... meeting my Nonno's sister there I hope as well. I'll then be holding my breath and wearing all my clothes as I jump on a boat for Sicily, (weather and hostel permitting) for a few days, and then back to where my heart sings of family again. To then strap all my bags on for the long journey home.

Thanks for sticking it out with me this far people. I'm getting close to coming home.

xoxo
Benita
San Giorgio Morgeto

OK so San Giorgio Morgeto may seem like an obscure place to visit. After all it is in the middle of Calabria and not the easiest place to find. However, it is also the place where the Ferraro family has its roots (along with most of the rest of the Italian community in Guelph). Right away we must thank the Raso family for all of their help and kindness in getting us there. We called a family friend who was born there to ask about a good hotel ...

The Deep South (of Italy)

... drive up Vesuvius but I take the wrong road and we drive through Terzigno and all the other towns that fill the plain between Vesuvius and Naples and Giuliana gets to see the Italy that's not in the tourist brochures - broken roads, slums, overcrowding, interminable traffic, etc. We would like to visit Naples, but we don't have time to navigate our way through its chaos, and we are dissuaded from staying in the centre by a hostel I ring, who say there would be a high ...

Tropea - I had no idea!

... times. Of course we were curious to see this place as it was all very matter of fact. So up we went, and found a beautiful site overlooking the country and sea with an open air church and two fenced in squares stating the exact dates when Jesus appeared there. Very unusual and for me very strange and rather funny - I can't imagine ever seeing a sign like that in Australia that's for sure!

The Italian language

... Italian or wish to learn Italian. The Italian language reflects what Italy is today: a country greatly changed and still transforming, a country that is not what is used to be nor as picturesque stereotypes would have it; a country with positive sides and contradictions too that just keeps on charming tourists from all over the world!

The Hunt for the La Praia Hotel

... so we're suckers for scenery and that was the road of choice for us, not to mention it wasn't the height of the tourist season so traffic would be at a minimum. A few beach stops at Praia a Mare and Amantea as well as a short stop by a rushing river near Scalea provided enough diversion to break up the drive south. We passed through Pizzo near mid-afternoon and made good time reaching Tropea with daylight to spare ...

With the family in CALABRIA! Sant'Onofrio & more
