The half way point
... some significant wealth at some point as there are a large number of very old big ritzy residences. We are staying in one that has been converted into a hotel. Barcelonnette is well off the beaten track so it's history must be a little obscure. Tomorrow we go over the Alps into Italy and spend two days at Portofino. Three Passes
... for two more mountain passes until I finally shook him off by not stopping any more.
The last dash to home spoiled the whole day. It rained enough to soak me then the sun came out and steam was coming off my jacket. Then my lovely perfect surface disappeared and the road became a goat track. Then it started raining again all the way down the mountain which made for horrible treacherous riding.
Never mind - can't be perfect all the time.

Alps!!! French ones
... track to the top of the Col d'Allos.
Down the other side, 20kms to Barcelonette, the roads were only slightly better. Lots of blind corners and rough surface and you are lucky to be doing 30km/h.
Spectacular scenery though!
Settled in to the camp ground which has free wifi, and a restaurant and somewhere nice to sit out of the rain... which came down in buckets as a passing thunderstorm struck!

Voiron to Gap
Tim's blog post captured the flavour of today. (And if you do the math, it's after midnight, so this will be short.) I am only adding a few photos of the spectacular views we saw (when we weren't bowing our heads due to the rain!) For the most part the day was sunny; it was just the rainy start and frequency of short but drenching showers that made it seem like a generally rainy day.
