A white Christmas is what we ultimately left London dreaming of. The local ticket inspector in Grenoble calling it quits on our planned day of travel (naturally) and all subsequent trains being cancelled definitely challenged the dream. Not to the point that an afternoon of french sun and 5 litre red cask couldn't solve though. Winning.

... became more rough with some potholes as the vegetation thinned - we were clearly above the snow line. Then a summit came into view after a small tunnel and with sheer cliffs in several directions we would need to concentrate. Today we had a 20.1km climb at 5.5%. It was overcast but thankfully the rain held off until we were arriving at the campsite. Our SPOT tracker has died today, so unfortunately shows us still in Guilestre! We plan to carb load now as have a huge day tomorrow up the Cime de la Bonette (2802m), a 23.1km climb at 6.5%. Yikes. ... and we very much enjoyed the 31km descent and stopping in Arvieux for a burger, salad and proper coffee! We made it to the campsite in good time and glorious sunshine so we went straight in the pool! Time to rest now as we have another big challenge tomorrow.
