Day 5: Backside of the Mountain

... 251 3 hrs, 8 kms The back side of San Marino is quite different from different from the front side. The front side is quite urbanized with town after town leading to the seemingly unconquerable cliff. The backside is more laid back rolling hills--even the slope leading to mountaintop capital doesn't look so difficult to climb, sort of detracting from the theory that San Marino maintained its independence because it was impossible to conquer. ...

... 20, 2009 Day 256: 2 hours, 3.2 kms I continue on down the main highway a little bit. I’m the only pedestrian walking down it and it seems like there’s a police car going by every few minutes. Then I realize… it’s probably the same car! It must be a rather monotonous job, being a San Marino cop and driving back and forth across the country every 10 minutes! 0521 The Many Faces of Rimini (Ita 046, 09B -146) Rimini, September 19, 2009 Day 255: 5 hours, 14.7—total: 25.1 kms I’m looking forward to Rimini, if for no other reason than that it looks like there’s a 13 Euro hostel here… That’s well within my budget-- in fact, I could actually stay here a while if I wanted to. And that’s a good feeling. After 50 days of feeling that I just have to keep moving all the time, Rimini might end up ...

... the street, with furtive glances from side to side with an cardboard with cheap imitation sunglasses attached. Always on the run, hoping to make a few euros and not have his illegal wares confiscated by the police. Two men came to Italy seeking a better life. Two very different experiences. I pass a square where a band is playing and locals young and old are doing a lively dance with a sort of polka style band playing. The couples spin in circles ...
