Day 6
... in the mini series as being at least a half mile away and only taking about a half hour to take the guns out. In reality, the guns were only about 150 yards from battalion HQ and it took over 3 hours to knock them out. Pure gold
We headed out earlish, after woofing down a pan au chocolat, hoping to work out where our campsite is but failing. After a very indirect route (the problems with not knowing where you are) we drove past 'Sword' and 'Juno' beaches and stopped at at 'Gold' beach.
From the view point above Gold you can see the whole beach - broad, golden and inviting looking - it is difficult ...
Through the tunnel
Through the tunnel - incredibly straight forward, un-scary and quick. That said losing an hour played havoc with our schedule - we found a campsite around 4 but we're not sure where - that can't be good.
Over tea (sardines with courgettes and tomatoes) we decided to stay an extra night and visit the D-Day beaches...what was that about a schedule?

... think Arromanches-les-Bains would be a fantastic summer vacation spot. The town is also were there are the last remaining caissons of the Mulberry harbor that the allies built. What I find incredibly interesting is that 2 of these temporary harbors were built, one at Omaha Beach, the other at Arromanches-les-Bains on Gold Beach.
