Since Oktoberfest I've minced my way south through Germany over a couple of days, passed through Switzerland and I arrived in Chamonix yesterday. The views in Chamonix are terrible, just mountains everywhere.

... entertained most of the time, though the occasional traffic lights at roadworks provided some dramatic viewing opportunities for me. Coming into Chamonix was really dramatic and H managed to find a great picnic spot next to a golf course (pics). Nice to stay in an hotel for a change, simplicity and anonymity oddly reassuring. Love to all again. ...

John, my brother in law and I had a magnificent day up at L'Aguille de Midi (3,841m) high above Chamonix followed by a three hour hike from the cable car's mid station to a glacier where we caught a little mountain cog railway back down to Chamonix.

We were very lucky; the weather was perfect, full sunshine and beautifully clear air. Great for photos. I'll enter more details once I have a little more time. I just wanted to get these photos up on the ...

... into Chamonix for dinner and found a lovely Italian restaurant with superb food and service at a very reasonable cost. Easily our best meal in France. Walking home, we stopped to watch the Arle River which has swollen very rapidly so it was almost flooding some restaurant verandas overhanging the water.
