... and then began a long climb up the Col De Mollard. At the top of this climb the pro riders earn points for the "King of the Mountain" points competition. The KOM is a competition within the 3-week TDF race. The rider who earns the most points wears the white and red polka dot jersey. Points are earned for being the one at the top of the most climbs. A rider may earn the most points yet not win the overall race.

... getting tiring.

Today's ride was relatively short at around 38 miles with 4,064 vertical feet of climbing. We had a nice steady warm-up to begin the day. We had a group of about 12 riders and we pace-lined through flat roads for about 7-8 miles. After the warm up we began our first hill climb. ... anticlimactic from all the stuff I had heard about the Galibier. We reached a resting point where there was a small restaurant and a field with hundreds of sheep and a shepherd. Raymond said that his new career goal is to become a shepherd in France. By now I was a little tired but not too bad overall. since we had been climbing so much, 3% seemed like a piece of cake. At the top
of the Aravia we had an amazing view of Mount Blanc, which is the highest
mountain in the Alps topping out at 15,771 feet. Our ride leader said it was
rare to see the peak as it is usually covered in mountains.

Anyway, I got to the start line on time - dead straight forward, I found my group easily Unfortunately Chris and I were in different start groups I was in group 3 and Chris was in group 12 with a 1hr start difference. A beautiful warm morning, no sign of any clouds or rain....that's better than last year.
