we're here and it's snowing!

... the week but on Saturday we leave for St Anton - apparently it's an 8 hour drive so up at 6AM.... when we get there we get to go to our permanent accommodation - we're living with the other couple and apparently our appartment has en suite bathrooms and a washing machine so sounds pretty good to us!

attached a couple of pics showing the view from our window when we arrived and the view now...

speak to you all soon!

Winter is coming.

... a glimpse of a massive glacier on our way to the mountain and later got a great view from a peak further down the ridge. I saw a glacier this summer in Montana's Glacier Nat'l Park but I have to say that despite the parks breathtaking views, its glaciers were hardly impressive compared to Chamonix. This was a legit, man eating, climber scaling, cavernous abyss kind of glacier. We were able to take a gondola that ascended the peak parallel to the glacier some 12,000 feet. After nearly ...

Chamonnix Oct 22-23, 2009

... was a Golden in the corner and then
a some kind of terrier arrived and they were introduced to each
other. Then about a half hour later, a Bernese Mountain dog made a
grand entrance, all 180 pounds of him. He immediately headed to the
open arms of the chef and assistant in the rear near the kitchen and
was slobbering over everyone. Next he was invited into the kitchen
for what I don't know, although my decision was now made about eating
dinner that evening. As I ...

... The LAN-DTW flight was late, but I had a 3 hour
layover in Detroit, so it did not affect me. I arrived in Detroit
and went to the Delta Sky Club (formerly the Northwest World Club..no
longer in existence due to the merger) and had a couple of beers
awaiting the flight to Amsterdam. The flight to Amsterdam was
uneventful, although as usual I did not get any sleep on the flight,
and we arrived in time at 5:55 am, giving me time for my 7:10 am
flight ...

Mont Blanc!

... 20 off we went.
The route was via motorways, we did turn off for a Lidl, getting some more money and petrol. We also sat outside the Maccas in the carpark to use the free internet to book accomodation. Our hotel is the number one ranked on Tripadvisor for great views and good service. Hopefully a very nice view of Mont Blanc, so we can see what the pens are trying to achieve on the top of the lids..hehe. I do remember selling Mont Blanc pens at David Jones during Uni..they were ...

Skiiers paradise and Jon's nightmare

... poorly marked. Half the streets in Europe are so narrow anyways; they all look like one ways. So this car pulls up behind up and blocks us in, sweet, it’s the cops. They tell us we went up a one way.... So we honestly tell them it was a mistake and we're trying to turn around. Then they ask us where we are coming from and how much have we had to drink? Here we go... We had 1 big bottle of beer each 2 hours ago, then split ...

trekking next to Mont Blanc

... from 1250 to 2360 meters in the morning, and then walked all the way back down to Chamonix. Wonderful views, but we were shattered in the evening, so we treated ourselves to a fondue savoyarde, mmmhhh!!

The next day was slightly shorter, but we still walked for 5 hours. We even did a bit of 'trail running' when we realised we were half way up the mountain and had a train to catch to get back to Geneva!!

Skiing is for little fat kids

... lift up, and Brendon overlooking the slope down Sunday - 25 February 2007 Early, but painful rise, (8am) to a good breakfast which was to consist of cereals, eggs, and croissants each morning to start the day ahead. Before you could swallow down the last sip of coffee everyone was rearing to get out onto the slopes. I took a while to figure out my dressing procedure as with gloves I wasn't able to do much and even getting the gloves over my wrist guard proved ...

Le soleil et la neige (or lack thereof)

... through the nose for fresh food. There is a bakery in Belle Plagne that has a line at all hours of the day, and it was charming watching people walking through the snow with baguettes in their hands. We indulged in French cheeses like Roquefort, and bought so many saucissons we had to take some home. On the Thursday Ian hurt his shoulder falling over, as snowboarders do, and on Friday didn't want to risk further damage, so we opted to return our gear early and set out for a mountain ...

Live for the slopes

... of the last word) but it is pronounced meadie, then when u get to the top ur guide will find you and will take you on a 150 ish metre walk along a norrow part of the peak to a place where you will be able to put ur skis on and get on down the hill.
this run's length depends on how much snow they get. but it took my group about half the day.
I loved it. I stayed in a very confortable motel as well. everything was great.
Definately do it.
