      ... use the canal. Cruise ships are charged by the number of people on board so our ship, if it was going through, would have to pay something around $300,000US. The larger container ships could be charged as much as $1,000,000US to pass through the 8 hour trip. We drove down to the Pedro Miguel locks to get a close up look at the locks and watch the ships travel through.       Let me just say that to all appearances southern California does appear to be a magical lala land in which everyone is happy all the time, even when they are working.
