... and eventually we found the bus stop, I thanked him profusely, forced him to take $5 and then he rushed off to work where he tries to sell people credit cards over the phone.

Again I whipped out my high school spanish (which is improving btw), and bought a bus ticket to Tamarindo. As I sat down in the open air bus station and dropped my bags next to me, I just started to look around me. There are few ...

Arrival as told by the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

... taking a picture. I walked over to her, identified myself and we hugged…tightly. And then she started rubbing my hair…ummm…it was interesting and by interesting I mean creepy. It was not a caress like she wanted to go steady and not quite a hair mussing like I was her child , but more like a fact finding dig-scratch-pat. She called our cabbie on her cell phone. Rodulfo's brother (that was how he was introduced) pulled up minutes later.

(The ...

More hard work, in very hot weather!

Waking to the sound of the cockerel was a shock to our system... Luckily a big Costa Rican breakfast and copious cups of coffee pulled us round ready to head off to the site. Today was even hotter than yesterday, and moving breeze blocks in the scorching equatorial sun was hard work to say the least - the boys will be showing off their bulging pecs on return after pushing the barrows of blocks uphill all morning! Luckily, we got to work on our tans at the same time! After a morning of ...

Four months and fourteen days.....

... black pepper, fruit trees (most we had never even heard of before), sweet potatoes, corn and new types of greens. We planted a garden and ate from gardens of past volunteers. We really enjoyed the company of the campisinas as well as the company of their gigantic library which we were at liberty to peruse while we stayed. We spent our mornings 7 - 12 working on the farm and the rest of the afternoons in our peaceful cabina reading, hanging in hammocks ...

Monteverde Weekend - Amazing but still in Pain

... quite allergic to horses. I took some before I rode but it didn’t help. It was pouring all morning so everything was soaked and muddy and the horses smelled. Lovely… anyway, my horse’s name was Cubano – he was brown and fairly sweet. It drizzled on and off for the ride and the path was extremely rocky and slippery and uphill and the horses were slipping and trotting and it was hard enough to stay on the saddle because we had trouble ...

A Break from Teaching

... until the late 70's that this law was reversed and the Borucans were able to begin passing on their customs to new generations. As of now, only 12 Borucan's fluently speak Borucan. For this reason, the schools now require their students to take Borucan classes as well as classes with their tribal craft of mask making. Besides teaching the class about how interesting the Borucan culture is, the purpose of these lessons was to place us all back at the first beginner level ...

Arenal, Costa Rica

... up with them around 12:30pm to continue along to San Jose, our last stop on the trip. Tonight is going to be the final group dinner, with the tour officially ending tomorrow. Some are continuing on to do the next leg of the series... Panama and then South America. A few, like me, are staying just one or two extra days to take advantage of some of the stuff San Jose has to offer (shouldn´t take long from what I´ve heard), and some are leaving right away.

Sharks, Vultures & a mythical Mechanical Bull

... or German Tourist to fall out of a bus, so they can feed of the carcases! Also saw a field full of flamingos today as well, which look fantastic with their pink colour against the green landscape. Had a not so nice brush with nature as well, when I was lounging in a hammock reading my book in Tamaringo - after I had recovered from Damo swinging me so hard I crashed into a gas canister - and was just thinking how nice it was when a rat ran under me swinging there ...
