I'm expecting lots of errors in this part of the blog - I'm trying to type while on the train. I thrive on a challenge.
Seaworld was a great day.
It started interestingly. we asked the concierge to call us a taxi - but a van - because there were 6 of us. Now, remembering that it only cost us $20.00 plus tip for all of us from the …
Today is a transit day.
We had breakfast at the hotel, finished packing then checked out.
Taxi shuttle trip to the Anaheim Amtrak station where we caught our train to San Diego.
We had Business Class tickets on the train so we had a very pleasant and comfortable trip.
After a bit of a wait at the train station in San Diego …
Today was a bit of a recovery day after a long day yesterday.
We caught the bus from the front of the hotel to the nearest trolley station then caught the trolley to Mission Valley proper, where there is a big Westfield mall and lots of other shops.
We found a number of things we NEEDED that were much MUCH cheaper than they are at …
... I can't remember the names of... The pandas themselves were lovely, but a little boring, as they were just sleeping. San Diego has an amazing reputation for breeding pandas, which is incredibly difficult - one of their pandas has had 5 babies, which is a record for breeding them outside of China - and a couple of weeks ago they had another one born. On the exhibit the keepers had monitors up which showed the mummy panda and the baby inside together, which is adorable ...
... there is to say about the park except that it appeared to live up to Eli's wildest expectations. There were life-size lego animals and people everywhere. Our first ride was a Safari Ride and all around our track were life size lego animals, giraffes; pandas, lions, wildebeest, etc... It was a bit strange seeing all of these animals in lego style just one day after seeing them in real life at the Zoo, but we quickly adjusted.
We spent the first part of the day ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Residence Inn San Diego Mission Valley
Great Family Hotel
I am a travel agent, and my family and I had the pleasure of staying at the Residence Inn for five nights. We are a family of five (17b,10b,7g) and the KIDS Suites are WONDERFUL. The suites are spacious, clean, and well appointed with 3 TVs and a full kitchen complete with dishwasher and full refrigerator. The staff at this property is exceptional. The buffet breakfast, although very popular and sometimes crowded, is good and has lots of choices, go early - 30mins before closing, they start to run out of things. The complimentary dinner M-Thurs. is a nice touch, something we had not experienced before, great for those days when you are tired from sight-seeing and do not want to go out to eat. Again, go early to beat the crowds and have the freshest meal. A nice Health Club overlooks the pool, although simple in equipment, very clean and modern. The hotel location is ideal for a quick drive to Old Town, Sea World, the beaches and interstate exchanges - not a good location to get out and walk around, like the downtown waterfront area of San Diego. I will definitely recommend this property to my clients going to the San Diego area. Feel free to write with specific questions.
Excellent for children
Stayed in November 2003. VERY nice Residence Inn. If you have children pick the bunk bed option; my daughters LOVED them. The breakfast might not have been as all encompassing as other RI we have stayed at - but very good. Only minor problem is that you are unable to walk to any good restaurants nearby. But highly recommend this RI.
Excellent choice for families
By far this is the best choice for families. We visit San Diego often & have been dissapointed in the quality/value of our previous hotels. We found this hotel to be very convenient to all attractions & even easy to get to beaches. The hotel is brand new & so clean. The full kitchen is equiped with everything you could need including a full sized fridge with full sized freezer, microwave, full sized diswasher and a cooktop!
It is nice to have extra room for the kids. It was really like staying in an apartment. A full buffet style breakfast is served that would rival many resturants & best of all, it is included in the price, no extra charges. The staff was attentive and friendly & available. We have told all of our friends about this new place & we will always stay there in the future.
Convenient, new residence inn
This is a new residence inn and a ltlle different from the normal 2 story townhouse properties. Its 4 stories, and the suites are a little smaller, and the kitchens not as nicely doine as they used to be.
Still, its pretty nice. The suite worked well and the location is very convenient: its 10 minutes to the zoo downtown in one direction and 10 minutes the other way to seaworld. Mission valley is retail heaven with several malls and all the big box stores (including an IKEA -- cheap modern furniture and household stuff) The pool is a big one for Residence Inns and theres a separate kiddie wading pool, and a decent exercise room. The breakfast room is big, and it fills up toward the end of breakfast.
Place to stay
Having two small children this is the place to stay. The property was clean and much bigger than your average hotel room so the kids could move around. Having the full kitchen was nice. The staff was friendly and helpful. Close to sea world and the zoo. You do need a car to get around. I will stay in this place again.
Residence Inn Great for Families
My family of 12 had an awesome time at The Residence Inn on Hotel Circle. Everything was clean and nice. The breakfast was excellent. We grilled dinner by the pool. Everyone was very helpful with directions and recommendations. We only had one problem - our reservations were not correct when we arrived. The hotel management did finally reduce our amount per room per night which made my husband very happy. If you stay here you need a car - not much within walking distance.
Location was very bad
This is a very nice hotel but don't go there if you don't have a car as it is on the Hotel Circle which isn't near anything other than other hotels. We had to take taxis everywhere which gets quite expensive.
Fashion Valley Shopping centre is about a 40 min walk or you can get the bus which is outside the howard johnson hotel and then from fashion valley you can get a bus to the Old town. We asked at reception about buses and they didn't have a clue about them. they didn't even know what number bus passed by. There is no restaurant or bar in the hotel only what they serve for breakfast and on Mondays to Thursdays they do an evening snack but that is it. The day we were leaving the housekeeper knocked on our door about 4 times (she wanted to clean the room) starting from about 9am which I found very annoying as we did not have to check out until 12 and we were trying to sleep before our flight that day. The room we had was very nice, it was very big and other than the hotels location it would have been great.
Staff was very helpful and courteous, facility was new & very clean.
Breakfast was really very good for a little buffet. Our room was nice, quiet, parking was free and adequate. Family friendly. We would stay there again. Just wish it were located closer to the beach and away from hotel circle.
Children loved it!
This hotel offers cheerful, modern, well-kept mini-apartments and a helpful staff. We stayed in a kids suite which the children loved because they had their own room with bunk beds and a VCP. The pool area is also good for children. It has a wading pool with a fountain, a spa and a swimming pool with a maximum depth of 4 1/2 feet. There are a few pool toys and our children spent several hours there each day.
On the negative side, the hotel is located in the depressingly ugly hotel circle area of San Diego. The kids room in the kids suite is adjacent to the stairs and got lots of noise until about 11 p.m. The adult bedroom in a kids suite is very small and it is difficult to reach the far side of the bed through a 1 foot space between the foot of the bed and the wall. I don't think you have the same problem in other kinds of suites.
The breakfast is ample and the food quality was okay for a buffet.
However, they only serve breakfast until 9 weekdays and 9:30 weekends.
Everyone shows up about 8:30 and there's a long line for food.
Despite these shortcomings, I still thought it was a good value at $140 night. (Booked through a discount web site. Rack rate is $289-way too much)Stay here if you really want a seperate room for the kids and want to prepare your own meals.
Very nice property
This is a brand new property. Rooms are not large, but adequate. Very good breakfast with those machines that let you make waffles. Some of the rooms offer bunk beds for kids. Will stay there again.
