Later—Monica called and we are going to the Newport Bay tonight- It is a floating eatery in the Willamette River. It is nice out today. I should have gone walking, but did not. Maybe tomorrow. I only have another week here!! Oh, I did get my jacket that I bought at the estate sale, and lost, back! It had fallen off my bag into Monica’s car ...

It gets its name from its feather covered legs which come in handy when they migrate to the Arctic. Those hawks have been observed hunting voles from the ground. The bird searches for its prey then flies low and pounces on it prey, then repeats the procedure. We actually saw two rough legged hawks using this hunting technique.

We met up with Bill Thompson at Umatilla and were soon on US 14 riding along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. A really nice road with little traffic and several small and scenic towns. We stopped for lunch in Stevenson, WA at the Family Diner and had a gear meal and even better pie. Then on to ...
