Joanne and l left Medina early this morning. We stopped at the best bakery I have ever gone to for our breakfast bakery. Then since I had a captive audience I drove by my old house. It was still standing. The rest of my old haunts look the same but the area has really changed. Can't stop progress I guess.

... businesses appeared closed or if open they certainly did not look inviting. Homes that had obviously had a fire some time in the past were left standing-- it seemed like people just walked away from their homes but they stood there in whatever state or experienced vandalism after they walked away. It seemed to us that the impact of the downsizing of the auto industry was pretty evident still in Flint.
... and the snakes. We went to dinner at a place called the Outback Steakhouse. It tries to be Australian. I don't know any Australian restaurant where you can get lobster for $6.99! The food was really nice and the steaks were amazing. I taught the very American waitresses to say "gidday mate" and explained what "off your face" means. ... It appears the center of that refining has been meetings at Calvin College. The hospice chaplain who came to visit us while Aunt Rita was dying identified himself with the Reformed Christian church. I had no idea what that had meant until I tried to understand Calvin College's place in the contemporary Christian world.
