Flew into Anchorage from NJ. It was a long 10 hour flight with a short stop-over in Seattle. We didn't really spend any time in Anchorage, basically got there at 9pm , rented our car and drove to the hotel. It was your basic Residence Inn - clean and comfortable beds. Due to the time difference (4 hrs!) we were up early and headed out to Denali. Our first stop along the way was Talkeetna where we got some great views of the Alaskan Range, but nothing compared to what we would see the next day...
Anchorage, Alaska, United States bkamHello all, Wow! What a first week in Alaska. I don't know where to start so while I am pondering that, I will tell you that prior to my trip to Alaska, I took a short trip to Little Rock, Arkansas. The weekend was intense as my partner and I saw many soldiers and their families. One of the best things about the weekend was meeting and working with my partner, Linda Mims from Dallas. Linda educated me regarding the difference between acceptable and unacceptable purses. We had a good time and I...
Anchorage, Alaska, United States jrsherman81054It has been a couple of weeks since last we met. I hope everyone is doing well. As for me, with each passing day, I am becoming more grateful and more aware of what a blessing it is to be alive. I've noticed that it is becoming easier to ignore certain events and/or situations that are really just minor annoyances and appreciate the myriad of simple pleasures that occur on a moment by moment basis. That old saying, "Don't sweat the small stuff, it's all small stuff" hits the spot I guess. Thi...
Anchorage, Alaska, United States jrsherman81054I was hoping to write an exciting report about my trip to the Arctic Circle and the North Pole. I envisioned a vivid description of the Northern Lights in all of its glory and color. Unfortunately, the road I would need to take (Pipeline Road) was not open all of the way so I decided to put off the trip . I hope to take that trip before my time is over. So what does one do when all plans fall through. My friend and I decided to go in search of Sarah's house. Arriving in Wasilla, we made multi...
Wasilla, Alaska, United States jrsherman81054James Taylor sings the song, "Everybody has the blues." One of the lyrics in the song is, "Everybody's got some days that they can't explain." Now I know that this blog has been all about sharing a journey and it's been a pure joy for me to share my experiences with you. To this point, I have tried to share experiences that have been upbeat and unique as the journey has been just that - upbeat and unique. I feel in the spirit of the journey, I must share the positive as well as the unfortunat...
Girdwood, Alaska, United States jrsherman81054The last two weeks have been very strange. The sun has come out and the snow has all but melted away from the streets, the lawns, and the parking lots. It's as though I am living in a completely different city. I can actually see asphalt, grass, and dirt. In fact, I have begun to notice the grass turning from a lighter shade of pale. I have been told that when Anchorage decides to have spring, it happens practically overnight and turns into a paradise of colors. The last couple of days, the l...
Talkeetna, Alaska, United States jrsherman81054Left Homer. Drove Sterling and Seward Highways to Anchorage. Saw a few sights along the way. Brought the flyers to the airport for 1 AM flight.

... back slowly, never look at him in the face and never run; if you did, you would become a potential prey! I was never confronted with such a situation even though I saw a great number of grizzlies fishing in the lakes and in Brooks River.
You need to take the local bus and travel along the 37-kilometre dirt road to reach the Valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes. The landscape is gorgeous. In September ...
... I hate these overnight flights...)
Anchorage airport is interesting as it is a cargo jet haven. They must just stop to refuel from Asia - the cargo carriers here have been Eva Air, China Airlines, Korean Airlines, Asiana, UPS, Shanghai...none seem to empty any cargo...just park for an hour or two.
It's been a great trip...pictures will be on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmbell64/c ollections/72157622360839812/
... saw spouts of water coming up from the other side of the inlet. We were able to see the pod through the binoculars and you could see the spouts of water by the naked eye. It was the perfect finish to the trip.
We had to say goodbye to Chet first at the airport, then Betsy, Kenny and Ramon. We were next to be dropped off but arranged to catch up for dinner with Angela, AC, Nacho and Ramon at the Glacier Brewhouse. The Glacier Brewhouse ...
The last night at Alaska. No specific schedule, just shopping, and easy short drive to the berry farm to see the chocolate fountain. Our flight was like 1:28 a.m., so we got to the airport around 10 p.m. Finally, the night fell. I was so glad to see the night. My eyes felt comfortable. No wonder we all felt sore for the eyes, the sun's been shining all day long!
