Paris - Day 3

... at him puzzled. He pointed at the place we had made our purchases at. The name was "Gosselin". He has been hanging around me way too long for him to have picked up on that!! We found another Pylones store so that Conrad could buy our hosts a gift. We stopped at a cafe for some tea and to use their restroom. We were close to the Jardin du Luxembourg so we wandered through that. That place is huge!! And very pretty. I thought it was ...

"The sweetly sleeping sweeping of the Seine..."

... and impeccably dressed men, smoking cigarettes, were hopping on their scooters and zipping off to work. It was all quite lovely. The cobbles were clean and all you could hear were people greeting each other - 'good morning!' 'ah, how are things?' 'oh, not too bad...yourself?'. Even the Eiffel Tower area was quiet, save for a couple of dozen well-behaved and quiet tourists. Later in the day, the hoards of gypsies and souvenir touts would ...

Beauvais

... two weeks, so they are going to have to deal with it. It is so weird not to be traveling with Becka. Cara and Dan are great, but I feel like I'm the shy one when I'm with them. They are SO outgoing and crazy. I'm sure I'll get out of my shell soon. I have no idea what we're going to do in Beauvais. Jane is SO nice for letting us stay ...

Touring Paris on Christmas Day

... way and we started walking. I asked him what the guard had said and again he responded with I have no idea but he pointed that way so that's where we are going. Once again pointing saves the day. Low and behold the metro was not even 50 meters from where the guard was standing so he probably thought we were complete idiots but we were fine with that. When we got down, there was a map of the area and I stopped to look at it hoping to figure ...

Wet as a caniche...

... to meet up with Danielle and Lisa (the 2 girls from Vancouver that I've befriended) so we can go and see the Palais de Versailles. I met the girls this morning and we fill up on bread and Nutella (the Europeans have an obsession with Nutella) and head to the metro. We take 3 transfers to the metro that's supposed to take us to Palais de Versailles but are informed that there's an electrical problem and the train is no longer running to Versailles today. We're told we'll have to ...

Lost in France

... and the colours are beautiful. Every few kms a beautiful chateau. Epernay the place where all the champagne houses have their headquarters. Quite amasing to know that there are over 100km of cellars under the ground holding millions of bottles of champagne. In 1950, Mercier, ran a car rally in their cellars without the loss of one bottle! Every year 60% of the more than 300 million bottles produced is popped in France alone!

First Day in Paris

... dinner table to the amazement of the staff in the restaurant. Check out the photos! We then stumbled home and fell into bed before 8 after a full and entertaining first day in Paris. We all had a good 10 hours sleep and we woke to a bit of drizzle but this did not last long. We spent the morning walking the markets of Rue Mouffetard where we bought supplies for dinner and lunch. This afternoon we are going to take another walking tour of the Latin Quarter.

To Paris!

... Dutch, Flemish, German, something else along those lines? Whatever it was, it sounded quite nice and I hoped he would say it again but I could only reply "I don't understand, do you speak English?". He drew back, looked into my eyes from a space of less than a foot and said "Vere are you vrom?". I said the U.S. He drew back a bit further and said "**** off"- quite clearly and with such enunciation I could not mistake either of the words. He walked away. I let it go- but ...

Paris: The end

... and cavernous and we weren't at all moved, though the three beautiful rose windows were amongst the best we had seen. Notre Dame is famous for its balance, though the builders deliberately introduced barely noticeable elements of asymmetry to avoid monotony. The only asymmetric bits I noticed were the three main entrances, none of which is quite the same. After Notre Dame we walked up the Boulevarde Saint Michel until we reached the church of ...
