... the tourist office. Found the gardens after wandering through historic area (cathedral etc.) then took the bus (eventually) to Sacro Monte - VERY cold! - ice and snow and panoramic views and long wait for return bus! Wandered old town again and then back to car - difficulties finding route back - thanks to petrol man, got on the Como route and forged our way through the traffic ….home!

... have the option of indoor lodging if I can't handle the cold. Finally, there's a mountain lake, and a touristy mountain town on the other side. A lot of upscale looking vacation homes here. Everything's probably going to be pretty pricey--I guess I'd better get used to it... Switzerland will probably be worse. I go to check it out and... sure enough, on the other side there's a magical trail winding up the gorge, with mysterious abandoned stone houses and rushing rapids squeezing between the giant boulders. ... opt to set up my camera along the railing of the bridge and run down to pose with the guitar on a walkway along the river. Probably a foolish decision--as a somebody could bump the camera... and there'd go all the pictures and videos I've taken over the last couple of days... I continue on through the town, past a refurbished castle and an open area where you can gaze up at terraces and houses perched high up on the steep mountain slopes. This ...

Day 274 1 hr, 1 km With the steep, wooded mountainside to my left and a valley that is quickly narrowing to my right it's only a few hundred meters and I'm in the next town, Messe. I know that the uphill climb is getting close, including my big goal: to cross the Splugenpass from Italy to Switzerland on foot. I know it was just planted here for the warm months, but seeing a banana tree in someone's yard just feels really unappropriate. C'mon folks, this is the ...
