Tozeur – An Oasis in the Desert

Our day of adventures in Tozeur begins with a short walk to the nearby museum of folk arts and traditions, where we see depictions of Tunisian life throughout history. Afterwards six of the group members take an exciting jeep trip into the desert to see the Star Wars set of Mos Isley on the planet Tatooine. Since I experienced this adventure last year, I use the time to go shopping in the medina of Tozeur. One of the ...

Camel Ride in the Sahara

... accompanied by Berber youths. At one point I'm beckoned off my camel by a handsome man on a stallion and offered a ride on his horse. How could I resist?

We cross a huge salt lake on a causeway as the sun is setting, reaching our hotel in Tozeur. We’re very close to Algeria now, and looking forward to another day of desert and oasis adventures tomorrow.

... quasi assordante.

Temporary update!

The computers here are insanely slow and I'm not allowed to upload the pictures I've got! I 've written all the entries from the last one up till now, but alas, they're on a USB card too (used ethan's phone to type them out so that I wouldn't have to spend ages in an internet cafe). They're coming, don't worry. We're safe and everything's wonderful. I have lots of pictures and stories. We're off on our desert excursion tomorrow to the Grand ...

Into the Sahara

Wednesday, May 28, 2008 Into the Sahara Dear Readers: We make one more visit as a group this morning to Houmt Souk to see the souks and enjoy a coffee before leaving the island of Djerba. Retracing our route back to Matmata, we stop to visit a Berber dwelling called a Ksar. This particular dwelling has been occupied by the same ...

The camel that drank coca cola

... to be a long walk through the palmary, but we enjoyed it. Arriving at last, we paid the small entrance fee, and really enjoyed the collection of different creatures - a friendly monkey, rodents, jackels, lizards, wild boar, several types of dromedaries and snakes. After we had relaxed with a drink, some staff members came out, and gave demonstrations for the visitors, the number of which had now increased - not only foreigners but also Tunisians. A very brave man held a snake ...

Mountain oases around Tozeur

... than a dromaderie, and for some strange reason I prefer the word dromaderie - it has a grace and bearing to it that 'camel' just doesn't convey. Whatever, the Japanese guys were pretty happy when not long after they spotted their first 'ships of the desert' and the car stopped so they could take a few million happy snaps. Forty ...

Laid up in Tozeur Oasis

... fashioned from the abundance of salt we were coming into. Some of caves were actually cafes and it would have been great to stop and in see the chott close up, but the louage powered on by. Finally we hit the salt bed itself, a glorious expanse of blaringly light crust stretching off in all directions for miles. On both sides of the causeway ...

These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For

... into the desert and see the Ong Jemal (the neck of the camel). It,s not bad, getting there is fun. We drove offroad through the desert on a rough track, stopped to see a herd of camels, then a quick stop to look at the rocks. Then he took us over some wicked steep drops and some huge dunes, you haven,t really offroaded until you do it in the Sahara, then perched us on top of another high dune and directly below us on a flat space of desert sat Mos Espa. We went down into the ...
