We arrived in Manfedonia just as it was getting dark to a 4 room B&B over looking the harbor in the center of town. That evening the streets were decorated and packed with people to celebrate the festival of St Francis. They even broadcast mass on street speakers all over town. This morning got off to a rocky start. We took a "shortcut" which looked extremely promising on the map, however, the dirt road gradually turned into a two track and then a sand path through a swamp which was infested with most of the world's mosquitoes. Who knew mosquitoes loved Italy too? Eventually we pushed the bikes through the soft sand for about a kilometer while fighting off and ingesting the mosquitoes ...
... and came across an old man collecting snails; he had about 2 gallons so far in a large plastic bag. He was very industrious and excited about the future of his snails. He also knew how we could get to our destination (hint: in the opposite direction). On the way to town, we found a cheese wonderland with aged cheeses, spiced cheeses and barrels of fresh bufala mozzarella. The later of which became our lunch. Things tend to work out. Thank you ...
