My very last hike of holiday

    Today is the
second last day of my holiday so I felt I should do a heavy hike as it is to be
my last one. I’m now in a hotel in Megeve, a fairly upmarket village
particularly in the ski season about 30 kms from Chamonix. It is also only an
hour’s drive from Geneva which makes the return of my rental car on Sunday
prior to joining my flight home that much easier.

    Oops.

That stuff is strong and it blew my head off. Not wanting to alarm Rene who had warned me not to go too hard (he doesn't touch the stuff himself) I suggested we step back outside and go for a walk. Suffice it to say the train ride home was interesting.

Lunch was at "Le Deck" in Chexbres, a modern bar and restaurant at the top of the hill overlooking the vineyards and across the lake to France. An infinity pool on the edge gives the impression of being on the precipice, gorgeous outlook. The food and wine week delicious again - perch from the lake, John's new favorite and sea bass, another ...

A day in Gruyere with Barbara

Our day trip to Gruyere gave us our country side and small rural village experience in Switzerland. Beautiful rolling hills of green pastures and wooded forests lead to Gruyere, the town famous for that cheese. The old town (for tourists) is a single quaint street with restaurants, hotels, and craft shops. After a coffee and short walk, we had lunch at Le Chalet de Gruyeres, famous for its fondue. We ordered their specialty fondue - gruyere and vacherin cheeses with white wine, dipping ...

... at my brother's wedding a few years ago, in the best possible way.

And then on the Sunday we took advantage of the location. Katrina and I rode the ski lift up to the top of the mountain - something much more disconcerting when there's a fifty foot drop onto a concrete carpark rather than lovely soft looking snow. Apart from a bunch of mountain bikers we had the place to ourselves, and it was a lovely day.

In the evening we met ...
