Today is the
second last day of my holiday so I felt I should do a heavy hike as it is to be
my last one. I’m now in a hotel in Megeve, a fairly upmarket village
particularly in the ski season about 30 kms from Chamonix. It is also only an
hour’s drive from Geneva which makes the return of my rental car on Sunday
prior to joining my flight home that much easier.

Our day trip to Gruyere gave us our country side and small rural village experience in Switzerland. Beautiful rolling hills of green pastures and wooded forests lead to Gruyere, the town famous for that cheese. The old town (for tourists) is a single quaint street with restaurants, hotels, and craft shops. After a coffee and short walk, we had lunch at Le Chalet de Gruyeres, famous for its fondue. And then on the Sunday we took advantage of the location. Katrina and I rode the ski lift up to the top of the mountain - something much more disconcerting when there's a fifty foot drop onto a concrete carpark rather than lovely soft looking snow.
