Today lived up to the guide's hype. We started with a shuttle from Menthon to St Etienne de Cuines where we started our ride from the parking lot of a InterMarche. We were cautioned to pace ourselves given the length of the route and the amount of climbing, so after a short spin up the valley, we tried to take it easy up the climb of Lacets du Montvernier but the road had other ideas. There really wasn't ...

... to follow since the road was being closed for the Tour. We all filled up our water bottles and headed up to the summit finish at La Toussuire, a beautiful ski resort. By now it was getting very hot. They have been having record heat here in the Alps with most days reaching low to mid 90s. Everyone in our group kept a steady pace and we rested occasionally. Within our group there are riders of all abilities. On day one I think many were out to prove their cycling skill. By ...

... 3-mile climb at +7%. During tonight’s meeting I really started to feel run down. My attack on the last climb followed by hanging out atop a hot mountain was starting to catch up to me. After the meeting I ate a big dinner and left the restaurant quickly. I was worried that I wouldn’t feel good the next day. I think my blood sugar was low because after I ate and rested in the room for a bit I felt much better. Now it was off to bed to rest up for another big day of climbing. ...

... there were a couple of other people from the Thompson group so we stuck around together as we battled up the mountain. Along the way I stopped to take a picture of a monument for deceased cycling legend Marco Pantani.

By now we had been riding since 8:30 am with the majority of the time going up hill. We reached a point were there was a small restaurant towards the peak. I thought we had finally made it to the top until I saw a “2km to go” sign on ...

I awoke today feeling a little stiff but overall pretty
good. After a big breakfast we got ready for a long day on the bike. Today’s
ride was going to cover 64 miles and 7,900 feet of climbing. The main Cols we
were going over today included the Col de L’Epine, the famous Col de la
Croix-Fry, the Col des Aravia and the Col de la Forclaz.

Our ride started off with a nice easy warm-up on a bike path
near the river. Then we arrived at the ...
