... is where the hikes I’ve done in
this region are different and for me less enjoyable than those of Switzerland. I
don’t enjoy heavy climbs without any scenery other than trees. Most of my climbs
in Switzerland were accompanied by spectacular scenery which provides immediate
reward for the effort. The good scenery today and last Monday didn’t start
until at least an hour of very heavy slogging ...

... With significant aid from Rene I was able to get to see lots of the Netherlands including the dykes, hookers in Amsterdam and the beautiful old heart of Leiden.

Amsterdam was awesome as we went for a lovely bike ride, saw some old buildings, looked at some hookers and then got stuck into some beers before, as one has to I suppose, a visit to a coffee house. Feeling somewhat confident after some beers I ripped through half of my ...

Lunch was at "Le Deck" in Chexbres, a modern bar and restaurant at the top of the hill overlooking the vineyards and across the lake to France. An infinity pool on the edge gives the impression of being on the precipice, gorgeous outlook. The food and wine week delicious again - perch from the lake, John's new favorite and sea bass, another ...

Our day trip to Gruyere gave us our country side and small rural village experience in Switzerland. Beautiful rolling hills of green pastures and wooded forests lead to Gruyere, the town famous for that cheese. The old town (for tourists) is a single quaint street with restaurants, hotels, and craft shops. After a coffee and short walk, we had lunch at Le Chalet de Gruyeres, famous for its fondue. We ordered their specialty fondue - gruyere and vacherin cheeses with white wine, dipping ...

... roads. After a couple of hours free time we then got back in the bus and drove about 45 minutes for tea at an old cellar/restaurant place. The main attraction was to have wine tasting and a meat fondue. Well we got to try three wines, which were nice. Switzerland does not export much wine and none from this area, so there was no point getting too excited about liking it. The meal started with cheese and bread. The cheese was heaped ...
