Charas &Chubas& Getting High On The Bus To Ladakh

... may be cotton, silk or wool which are spun into threads on a spinning wheel. Mahatma Gandhi advocated the use of Khadi to promote self-reliance (instead of using cloth manufactured in Britain industrially). It's a good fabric to wear in India because it breathes well and i like it because it's a natural organic textile. A chuba is the traditional style Tibetan dress that all the women in the mountain wear everyday. It's a full length, form fitting, sleeveless wrap ...

Manali

Manali is a nice relaxing spot but again too hippyish for us. The highlights of this place for us have been 1. The chocolate chip cookies in the Toasted and Roasted cafe while watching movies there during the day! 2. Going to the Hadimba Temple and dressing up in the local traditional gear and getting our pictures taken with the Angora rabbits! 3. Meeting the 3 Irish and hanging with them 4. The Lamb and mint sauce in Johnson's Cafe From here we headed to Chandigarh

Trains, Mountains and Monk(ey) Business

... I'm so used to quiet now that when I do hear a car honking it really irritates me. Me, the girl who lives on a major street at home and sleeps through traffic like it's a lullaby. Things change quickly.

There is also a nearby town called Bhagsu. It's just a hippie/backpacker kinda village that is overrun by Israelis. The first minute I got there, some woman walked right up to me and invited me to Shabbat dinner. I still ...

Day 84

... our homes was bombed. In the morning we called our director in Delhi and encouraged us to come back to Delhi, and it was now safe. Uneasily we all got back on the bus and came home. We had expected the streets to be empty, and for everything to be calm. Instead we found Delhi to be full of life, and as if nothing had changed. It seems like maybe in America we usually take for granted our safe streets. Here terrorist attacks are not common place but ...

Leaving Leh layers via lakes. Oh - and Manali.

... floor of that valley, and that the valley is one with very some very high sides. What's more, the low elevation contributes to those valley sides being covered in a dense forest of large, dark trees - trees which can often be difficult to escape in order to find a decent view. Yes, it's the classic problem of not being able to see the woods for the trees. I'm back to being somewhere at the wrong time of year again. Manali does feel the effects of the monsoon, and at this time of year ...

Palampur Belly

... them. They gave me a lift to clinic where I had a drip for another 3 hours until my arm swelled and I cried with pain, it was awful. Thankfully, however, I had started to feel better. Now, a few days later, I feel much better. They gave me so much medication, I am now taking about 8 pills after each meal. I still get waves of nausea and my stomach is constantly bloated like a balloon...we think it is the bacteria giardia because a couple of ...

The hill station of Shimla

... of the staff and manager with my bag on his back, he grunted as he put the bag down, wiped his brow and collapsed onto a sofa. Cheeky bugger was only trying to give the impression that he'd carried my kit up from the station and would probably demand some commission!! Anyways I soon put the world to right and got him to admit that it was I who had done the donkey work. Sorted out a room, wrote a few emails, had a light bite and went to bed and watched the final ...

... frezzing. When we were above the landing area we started turning and dropping really fast which sends your head and stomach churning but fun once used to it. As the ground got closer and closer I realise he hasn't told me what I'm supposed to do so I casually ask as we are about 10m from the ground um what do I do now??? He says 'right lift lift lift' so we land very gracefully skidding along on our bums! The three of us meet up again all grinning manically ...
