... s Garden. While lovely, it was crowded and not free. Riley and Jordan joined us for s boat tour of the famous canals of Suzhou. We negotiated a 'deal' for five of us to go for the price of one: ¥120. We soon learned why. We were herded into a small, crowded room full of others, then herded onto a tour bus. ... very much like factories.

We arrived in Suzhou under half hour and were immediately enveloped in a smog of dust and smell of chemicals. Coming out of the train station I felt the air was filled with heavy smoke. Vicky, our guide, said that for all its ancient beauty, the town is also an industrial center with several manufacturing factories emitting toxic waste in the environment.
