5eme etape: Auckland

Departure, Arrival and First Day

So, we arrived at LAX at 6pm, and didn't wait in line for too long to get checked in. Between the 4 of us, we only had 3 bags, so that was easy. Then, onto the food court where we had dinner at The Daily Grill and then headed into the security checkpoint. After all the fumbling with bags and taking off shoes and jackets, we made it to GATE 120. We bought every gossip magazine they had and sat down to wait, luckily it was only 10 minutes or so. Amy looked at her boarding pass and realized that...

Exploring the Hotel and the City

So, yesterday I woke up at 4am local time - which was technically 8 hours of sleep since I went to bed at 8pm the night before. Amy woke up then too, we chatted and then somehow she was able to sleep for another 4 hours. She's amazing, that Amy. I, on the other hand, played SIMS and read and got dressed. Mom and Rissa and I went downstairs for breakfast at the buffet here around 6:30. This hotel has lots of businessmen and pilots/flight attendants. It's very much like Embassy Suites. Amy love...

Auckland/ Rotorua

AM - We arrive in Auckland after a restless 12-hr flight. We got to
talk to Wesley sitting next to us, who was born Canadian and now
immigrated to Australia, and joined the army- so some of our
conversations got awkward when he would elude to being a republican and
voting for McCain if he was American just because he didn't like
Obama's middle name- besides that he was actually a nice guy to talk to
but he swore a LOT and the biggest coincidence was that he w...

Rotorua

6:00 AM - We get
our rental car, and the rep was so sincere and helpful- which sadly
we've had to get used to with everyone we've encountered since- I guess
Kiwis and Aussies are actually best known for how nice they are, an
actual tourist attraction besides the scenery.

6:30
AM - It's pouring buckets, and still dark outside, so we were panicking
when we actually stepped foot into our Toyota Camry, and everything was
on the opposite side! Lu said he'd done this...

Dune Boarding

Mon Aug 25th
6:00 AM - Like
clockwork, I wake up 8 hours after going to sleep, perfectly rested-
and start re-organizing our luggage. Then, while lu wrote a paper for
his online class, I hit the pool for a few laps, spent 20 min in the
gym (which doesn't mean I did anything useful), and figured out how to
turn on and use the Swedish sauna for 15min all by myself (with faint
experience from Stockholm, minus the naked Holland man).

9:30

Auckland, New Zealand.

Addendum. In final Sydney News... After Melbourne most ex members of the edge (Chris, Renee, Mike, JK, me) and other pals rented a beach house in Woy Woy (what a funny name everyone!, anyone?). It rained for 3 days straight (apart from 15 mins) so we stayed in and stared out the window (fig.1).  During a midnight beach walk during the 15 minute rain break, me and JK got very scared of shapes leaping through the stream to the sea. Huge splashes and dark arches careering into the water. I genui...

What should we do first?

We leave San Francisco International at 10pm on Friday, March 21st. We fly all day Saturday, cross the international date line and lose a whole day. We land Easter Sunday in Sydney Australia for a 3 hour layover, then on to Auckland.

Definitely Going to Jump!

After searching online for things to do, We have decided that the Sky Tower in Auckland is something we must do. That looks like an adrenaline rush like no other. It's a long way down, and a short time to get there! WhoooHooooo!

Lord Nelson's Steakhouse

We arrived! 22 hours and then some. But we are rested and walking around Auckland. We found an excellent resturant, Tony's "Lord Nelson's" Steakhouse where we ate the best seafood.

Great hotel

from vancouver-jim
After a long flight, it was a pleasure to see our room at the Carlton. It was clean, spacious, and well appointed. There were no negatives for us.

Great location. Excellent service!

from Rockinfa
Got the Carlton club room which gives you breakfast and free drinks and canapes before dinner. Excellent way to go. Right downtown with everything in walking distance. Great service, friendly staff, excellent facilities.

Great Value for money !!!

from trip
We got an upgrade to a Carlton Club Room. The cost was nz$185 (95 euros) per room per nite. This included breakfast and 2 free pre dinner drinks each in the evening and access to the carlton club room. I personally think this hotel is excellent value for money and is located towards the top end of Queen Street. I found the location to be ideal. Service was excellent for the 4 days we stayed, and the indoor pool and sauna are excellent. I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again no problem.

Tired and dull but great value and staff

from Sydney_Alex
I stayed two nights in May 2004 (Lastminute)......good location and Reception/Concierge could not have been more helpful......Qantas flight crew stay there and they always insist on a good hotel! However, the restaurants are tired and dull. Try the Sheraton...cheaper (WOTIF) and fantastic!

Good Quality but NO atmosphere

from PassionateTraveller
I stayed for 3 nights at the Carlton as i got a good deal on wotif.com. Th eroom was perfectly fine for an hotel of this quality. However, I found the hotel lacked any kind of atmosphere an dwas very sterile, in spite of large atrium entrance. My view also looked out onto what looked like a car park. Th emain entrance also had a very strong smell. Not sure what it was, but not nice. Overall a high standard hotel bt for me it lacked any atmosphere an dwoudl be better as somewhere you would stay overnight and just get a good nights sleep.

Mot the best in Auckland

from Thorndon
Last stayed here two months ago. Reasonable location, and five star features, but not Auckland's best hotel by a long way. Average service, restaurant and food below what you would expect, and somewhat dominated by a tinge of cigarette smells (from a strongly Asian clientele). Staff often seem bored. Perhaps they are, as that is the overall impression.

Excellent Hotel

from avio
The Carlton is one of the best hotels I've staid in. It is a clean, stylish & luxurious 5* hotel. I believe it is the only atrium hotel in Auckland. The bathroom is large, full of granite & with a large tub & shower. The street below is quite busy & noisy at night. The location may not be dead central, but close enough. It's a 10-minute walk to Queen St. where there are tons of restaurants & shops. Queen St. will also take you down by the waterfront. There is a neat Asian food mall called Food Alley on Albert St. This place is like a food court on 2 levels with about a dozen of vendors offering a variety of Asian food. Try the Thai place on the left as you walk in, especially the Jasmine rice chicken soup. Be sure to visit the great Auckland Museum or sometimes referred to as the War Museum.

Outstanding Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed at this beautiful hotel in November, 2002 and loved everything about it. The room was beautiful, especially the marble tile in the bathroom. The room is a nice size and nicely decorated. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

What a surprise !

You must stay at Carlton in Auckland I was told, it is the best. So we checked in, was taken to our room, had a look and asked the porter to take our baggage back and checked out.

Luxurious room & bathroom

from A TripAdvisor Member
Qualmark rates this hotel as a 5 star hotel to which I have to agree. We had a room with 2 double beds (room 823). The room and bathroom are quite large. Everything looks quite new and clean. Beds were very comfortable. Bathroom is luxurious. The gym and pool is located on the 4th floor and looks quite nice. It takes a few minutes walk to get the beginning of Queens St. It will probably take 10 minutes to get you right in the middle of Queens St. There are other more centrally located hotel but maybe not as luxurious as the Carlton. Just make sure you look for the newer hotel. Some of the old hotels that were refurbished could be just as nice but why take the risk when you can go for the newer hotels. I can recommend Carlton Hotel for its luxurious, quite new, large room and bathroom. I enjoyed our stay in the Carlton. When choosing a hotel in New Zealand, check Qualmark, which is New Zealand tourism's official quality agency. All accommodation and tourism businesses that carry the Qualmark mark of quality, means they've been independently assessed.
