Fall Vacation, Part 1 - Stranded in Salzburg

Hi everybody! For our two week vacation this year we decided to go to Slovenia and Croatia. These are 2 countries that have become quite popular with Europeans again - as they were prior to the wars and other events that separated the former Yugoslavia into several countries. We thought it would be a good time to go - before these countries became too popular - but we might have been a bit late! It's a 14 hour drive from Amsterdam to Slovenia, so we decided to stop for a night in Salzburg alo...

The hills are alive with the sound of Griswald

We roll into Salzburg and the place looks like a dump! This is the home of Mozart and The Sound of Music and we have been told so many good things about the town that we are very surprised. We keep driving and hope the last kilometer turns things around. Well it does and there is an amazing river with green hills, a dome cathedral in the distance and a castle atop a hill. Other than that though the town seems dead – which surprises us. We park by the river and walk down the street. Foll...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Renaissance Salzburg Congress Center Hotel

Nice Hotel-don't like the location

from maxford
I stayed at the Renaissance Salzburg March 24, 2005. Very nice hotel. Modern rooms - some of the best I've stayed in. I would stay in this hotel anywhere in the world. But it's not close to the old city. You either have to take a cab or learn the bus system. If I go back to Salzburg I will stay closer to the old city area.

I was traveling with a large group. The hotel was very efficient with our bags and having our rooms ready. If you're on a group tour and this is the hotel they picked - be happy. Like many hotels in Europe this hotel is using duvets instead of a sheet and blanket - sleep naked with the window open - it gets very hot in the room. Breakfast buffet was ok.

Fantastic.... Great Reception Staff & Room Service

from Sublimerose
The hotel is fantasic. The staff are very friendly and are happy to arrange tours and dinner reservations for you at any time. The breakfast is also amazing (the best room service breakfast i've ever had) and the bed is absolutely massive!!! Would recommend to anyone traveling to Salzburg!

Merry Christmas!

We stayed at the hotel as part of a package, visiting the Christmas Markets in Dec 2004. The room was large, clean and well appointed and the staff very efficient. We dined at the Blue Goose, following the recommendation of a previous posting on this site, and we were not disappointed. The hotel reception made the reservation for us - watch out for visiting Krampuses, however, at this time of year - the restaurant was taken over for a short while!

Teutonic efficiency

Pleasently surprised. Stayed here on a boozy weekend away, and the location couldn't be better. Huge room (pity that the air con wasn't working but windows opened easily). Huge bed. Good bathroom. V clean. All staff excellent except one horrid woman in charge of overseeing breakfast who took exception to a group of us having the temerity to want to eat within 15 minutes of the end of breakfast. Cearly aimed at a business crowd, and not intended to be romantic, but you could do worse.

Not a nice reward...

from Harleycat
We stayed here on Renaissance/Marriott points and must have received a different room type than previous reviews. We had connecting rooms both of which were worn, stained, dirty and even though designated non-smoking.. were smelly. We were only there for 1 night. I would hate to think the hotel intentionally awards lower grade room types to those who continue to support the awards programs... we were there early August 2004.

Great place to stay

from Travelten
Stayed here with my family in July 2004. large clean rooms in a modern setting. Friendly helpful staff. One block from bus station, so it was easy to get to the Old town shopping and sight seeing area. Had a great dinner at a near by Italian restarant.

Great place to stay

I stayed here for 2 nights in mid June 2004. It is not in the main historic part of Salzburg, but that is ok, because it is a 2 minute walk from the train and bus station. So, just walk up there and take a 10 minute train downtown, or a 25 minute walk. The hotel was very modern, like a nice US hotel, with all of the modern comforts I am used to. Like an ice machine, fridge, big bathroom, comfy beds, big room, nice breakfast, etc. The staff was so nice and helpful and drew maps for us. They couldn't have been sweeter to us. The hotel is much cheaper than staying right downtown, but it is still very easy to get downtown. I will stay here when I come back to Salzburg. Oh yeah, eat at the Blue Goose restaurant. Ask the hotel about it, they recommended it for us and it was the best meal we had during the whole 2 week vacation.

I stayed here with my granddaughter in March, 2004. The rooms were nice and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was great. I will stay here again.
