Day 1: Travel and Alexandria, Egypt

Well the group finally made it into Egypt late afternoon yesterday (Saturday in Michigan).  The 9-hour flight from Detroit to Frankfurt went by rather quick, but the longer flight being from Frankfurt into Cairo.  After the 14+ hours spent between airports and airplanes we had to board a small bus that took us three hours to Alexandria.  After a couple of stops (one at an Egyptian "rest area" the other at an Egyptian McDonalds) we arrived to our hotel (Alexandria Renaissance).  Sam, my hotel ...

... docked. The streets are filled with trash,
currently no trash collection system. So imagine a city twice the size of NYC (22 million) without trash service. It was comparatively cool (96 degrees) during our visit. I can't imagine what its like at 120 degrees. The top floor of most buildings is left unfinished so that the land owner doesn't have to ...

In and out of Alexandria in a day

... say it is as comfortable as the Ramses Hilton, with a better TV (widescreen) and FREE wireless and breakfast included. We have a king sized bed (which is 2 king singles pushed together but its all good!) and a lovely view over courtyards and gardens. We just sat in our room, watched sunset..dinner was the remainder of the breakfast box and some internet and tv to decompress and make sense of the last week and a bit which has barrelled on by!

... we went to see the sphynz and no matter what angle you looked at the statue it was impressive. It isn't all gilded like the pictures depict but nevertheless it is impressive. From here we went to board our cruise boat for our buffet lunch and cruise along the Nile. Unfortunately the food was terribly and the Nile is filthy but we have been on the Nile, another goal acheived. After lunch we went to see the Alabaster Mosque of Mohamed Ali ...

To Alexandria and beyond!

Today was an early morning for breakfast and then getting in a taxi with "Bob" at 7:30.  Not the ideal vacation start in the morning but we had a long drive from Cairo up to Alexandria.  When planning this trip, it hadn't entered my mind to make the trip to Alexandria but we had this extra day to do something.   Once on our way, we had a pit stop to get sodas and gas so off we went and made it into to the city around 10:30 ...

... with the sea breeze. Makes a change from yesterday. My hotel is pretty much right on the sea front. My map pin marks the spot. I'll try and do this for every pin. I have a huge room with a high ceiling and bathroom which isn't much to write home about. Best thing is I have a balcony which gives me a good side view of the harbour and Med. Very nice to sit and watch the world go by. That said, I think it will be extremely noisy tonight. My hotel is plonked in ...

... a stone at the entrance. You could still see the painted decorations in the main room however, the paint was very faint. There was also some statues and wall carvings and even a dining hall where the surviving family members could share a final meal with the deceased. The final stop of the tour was Pompey's Pillar built on the remains of a Greek Temple. The pillar itself was 31 metres tall then there was a statue on top of another 10 ...

Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, Egypt

We were advised to dress conservative, i.e. no tank tops or short shorts. We chose the Classic Cairo tour which was a 2.5 hour drive to Cairo. Upon arrival at the Giza plateau, we could see the only remaining wonder of the ancient world, the famous three pyramids. The largest is the pyramid of Cheops. It contains and estimated 2mm limestone 2 tons blocks. The ...

... black) but I couldn't find one, maybe I'd have better luck in Saudi Arabia.

That night with only myself to entertain I got a cheap dinner from a place recommended by Lonely Planet. I was a celebrity once again and I had about 3 people waiting on me and making sure the food was good and I was happy, it was rather funny how hard they were trying. The meal was so incredibly cheap; freshly baked bread, fuul (hommus and fava beans), salad and a ...
