Well the group finally made it into Egypt late afternoon yesterday (Saturday in Michigan). The 9-hour flight from Detroit to Frankfurt went by rather quick, but the longer flight being from Frankfurt into Cairo. After the 14+ hours spent between airports and airplanes we had to board a small bus that took us three hours to Alexandria. After a couple of stops (one at an Egyptian "rest area" the other at an Egyptian McDonalds) we arrived to our hotel (Alexandria Renaissance). Sam, my hotel ...

It is not for the faint of heart and amazing that there are no serious accidents (at least none that we see).

We arrive at the hotel just before midnight. The hotel is near downtown and claims to be the best 3-star hotel in the area. It might be a 1-star at home. Our room has old, ripped carpet, a very noisy air ...

Alexandria, Egypt melano... the contrast between wealth and poverty that is such a feature of life here. The many orchards are surrounded by ornate block fences some 3 to 5 meters high and hundreds of metres long, with the grandest of entrances from the highway. Further from the highway would be the mansion. Between the orchards would be the simplest of flat roofed block homes and many dwellings in advanced states of disrepair. Overtaking us at great speed were highly decorated utilities of all ...
Alexandria, Egypt kingstravel... of fish broth soup and salad to start with. My stomach was getting ready to roll but there was no way not to eat this food as we would have offended him so in for a penny, in for a pound. Next came the place of seafood. The best way to describe the plate was a sampler of calamari, 2 whole fish, boiled shrimp, a piece of some other fish and lots of mussels. It was all tasty but I was super nervous about how my stomach ...
Alexandria, Egypt kcroone... the library which is impressive from the outside. It was made in the shape of a solar disc (as the worship the sun) and has all the alphebets of the world carved ito the sides of the building symbolising open mindedness. Headed back to Cairo to board the sleep train to Luxor.
Alexandria, Egypt biddy_travel... They also used the site for massive "bath tubs" used to clean up some artifacts that had been removed from the ocean. They were from parts of Alexandria that are now under water- large statuary smoothed by the water. At the amphitheater, there's a marked circle for performers where they can hear themselves perfectly- great acoustics! I can hear myself echo, but the audience can hear just a whisper. Also, have my first ...
