Just about 3 hours outside of Tokyo, we found our idyllic escape. The guidebook description alone was mouth-watering.

Hakone is a region popular among Tokyites (is this a word? If not, it should be) looking to escape the rat race for a day or more. Well up into the mountains, it boasts clean crisp air, lush forests, and a gorgeous alpine lake. Just what we were looking for.

    Caught the bus to Moto-hakone-ko
Boarded a pirate ship that went across Lake Ashi.
    Took 2 ropeways
    Boarded ...

Today is a day we will not soon forget. We attended the first day of the Tokyo Sumo tournament in Ryogoku. We got there probably a bit too early as the stadium was fairly empty and the amateur sumo wrestlers were fighting. Once the big guys started, we couldn't believe it. The stadium was jam packed. The ceremony and general atmosphere was amazing. Great experience all around. We then took a bullet train to Odawara station in Hakone, ...

The tipping point: I no longer want to come home

... almost-non-sequiteur appearance of a museum entirely dedicated to Antoine du Saint-Exupery and the Little Prince!

The botanical garden in particular overwhelmed me with the breadth of natural beauty on display. Walking among reeds and flowers in an enormous sunlit field, I felt so keenly that I've been 'doing it wrong' with an endless slog of overtime hours and wasted PTO.

    I guess I just didn't know what I was ...
