... had mostly collapsed. It was still very scenic though. We saw a sounder of wild boar (I confess I looked up what the collective name for wild boar was) trotting not far from the path just as the thunder was starting to growl in the distance. As we got back to Pescasseroli, the rain started. Although John had been the one to look up the weather forecast, he hadn’t thought to pack his waterproof coat. We sheltered under a tree for a while but it was raining ...

... and then they just got in the cars and drove away. The trip and tour was very interesting but a long day. We learned of the history of the four battles, New Zealand was only involved in the last two. Lots of history lessons including been shown a small village which was abandoned and never rebuilt. It's occupants fled to and lived in caves in the middle of winter to escape the Germans. We walked through the caves in a stooped fashion ...

... for a small portion and was much more comfortable and managed to fit in a couple of glasses of wine and some limoncello as well. We were still in the dining room after 10am as we were having a long conversation about the area and the war. Our hosts were interested and recognized many of the war photographs my father had collected, many in this area. They spoke about the children being given chocolate by the soldiers and how they enjoyed it as often they ...

... make your own fourth or fifth lane to make sure you get there that bit faster.

Once we had left the urban area, the drive up to Obi and our campsite was very scenic with snow capped mountains surrounding us. I just hope the weather doesn’t let us down.

The campsite is about 3 kms outside of Obi which is perched high on a hill. We ate at the campsite restaurant, our first pizza of the holiday.
