Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

We ate so many we actually got, what we called, chestnut cramps; a painful cramp in the stomach resultant of too many chestnuts in too short a period of time. We split into two groups at one point and had a hitchhiking race, which I have to admit, Michael and I failed miserably. For punishment we had to buy Rachel and Steve a three course meal from a grocery store. Might I add, it was pretty ...

... way up. It reminded me of the ‘magic painting books’ we loved as kids. A colourless picture transformed into a colourful image if one applied the water evenly. Mine were often a splodgy mess. In the mountains as the first snow settled it was the reverse process in dot form. Each wafting snowflake that settled, wiped out the colour to leave a white landscape. Being the first snow it wasn’t yet perfect. There were some stands ...

... place, the Verdona where we 4 sat at a table alongside a parapet on a side outdoor terrace overlooking the lake and had their daily specials menu of 2 courses - Fish in ravioli followed by gorgeous grilled salmon and bits. In fact it was so good we had hardly any dins later! It was a superb meal and in the time left we all split up to explore the alleyways on this tiny island. Then it was back onto the ferry once again to head to the next villa and garden on ...

... took photos with the group. Back on the bus to the hotel in Lake Maggiore (called Grand Dino), back by 4.30pm, rest the out to a restaurant nearby for dinner with a few of the group, Peter had seafood pasta and I had vegetarian cannelloni. Bought bracelets for gifts back home, walked through to the sister hotel ...
