Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

A cute B&B with two rooms – and the owners whose English is VERY limited – but we are settled in and ...

... have been hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of steps up, most of which were twice the height of a normal step. Also we did it CARRYING OUR PACKS on the warmest day that we have had thus far. Bloody funny now but not at the time. 3 hours of torture, my pack started with about 13 kgs and ended with about 11 kgs and let me tell you one decides what one needs to carry and what is excess baggage half way up!! Firstly carrying spare shoes - of no use so out they ...

... jumping over the exit gate to enter the Ruins which was somewhat awkward for us bystanders but funny watching him attempt to explain himself. After a quick explore entering at the entrance (which was only 100 meters down the road) we left to call our mums from the free wifi at Burger King (again excuse for BK lunch!). We had been duped by McDonald’s who only offered free wifi to customers with Italian sim-cards and even our hotel didn’t have wifi included, so ...
