Just when we thought Venice was the most beautiful place we would visit in Italy, Varenna may have beaten it into second place. Neither of us can get our heads round the fact that we are actually seeing what's around us. The apartment is amazing and the views from the balcony alone are worth the trip. Claire has also befriended a blind cat so we keep having to think of excuses to go and see the lady so Claire can rub the cat.

... drum, an empty can with rocks in it for a shaker, two sticks to hit together and our voices. It was a lot of fun, but I'm not so sure we sounded so great. Oh wait a minute... Did I just admit that?? We sounded phenomenal!! We spent some time climbing a fantastic mountain with a breathtaking view and exotic climbs. ... The rail service is alive and well too – a high speed train linking Torino and Milano whizzed past – we estimate at between 150-200kph. The villages are very different to Eastern and Central Europe where there are areas of “blocks’ and street side single family, single storey houses with barns attached. Here most of the structures are 3 or 4 floors. The older ones in stone have such character but must be difficult ...

... took photos with the group. Back on the bus to the hotel in Lake Maggiore (called Grand Dino), back by 4.30pm, rest the out to a restaurant nearby for dinner with a few of the group, Peter had seafood pasta and I had vegetarian cannelloni. Bought bracelets for gifts back home, walked through to the sister hotel ...

... friendly. But neither road leading away from town on either side of the Bellagio peninsula had a shoulder, which made it difficult to run for more than a mile or two without having to dodge traffic. Instead, Caroline and I found the nicest (only) gym in town at the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni and worked out a deal to use their facility during our stay. We went to the gym each morning and were the only ones there. It was perfect.

          We spent most of ...
