So where do I start... Erin and I had a great flight over... wine Tyelnol PM and we were out by 7pm so that we would beat the jetlag. The flight was pretty good but does not compare to the night we had once we were in Bologna. We started out with a walking tour of the city where we ended up in the middle of MASS... yes i went to church! Then quickly turned into a staring contest between us and eveyone in the city... So we quickly found the nearest bar for a glass of wine and more looks... thi...

Ferrara Highlights
9200 meters of city walls commissioned by Duke Ercole d'Este and built between 1493 and 1505 with walking paths on top.
Castello Estense de Ferrara--a defensive structure from the early middle ages that dominates the old city surrounded by moat. The Castello Estense was menacing from the outside and lavishly decorated on the inside. You could feel the history and understand the ...
Short train ride from Florence after a hair raising trip trying to return the rental car in confusing, congested and traffic restrictied Florence (don't rent a car downtown go to the airport). Bologna is an university town (even Johns Hopkin has a campus). Very historical town with a great plaza area like most towns and a great antique market.

After reading a bit about Bologna in travel books etc, we had a bit of an impression of what to expect, but still didn't really know what it was going to be like. I think if you were going to spend one or two days here, you'd maybe be a little disappointed. But, thankfully we had 6 days based in Bologna, so there was plenty of time to enjoy this amazing town. We did get slightly lost after arriving at the train station, but we ...
... and missed our train (the cheap one) to Florence. We ended up with last-minute tickets aboard the most expensive (10 Euros more, total, so not a complete disaster) train to Firenze. The train was full and we didn't pay for seat reservations, so we annoyed everyone by standing in the aisle, battering other riders to death with our oversized backpacks. We rate the Italian rail booking system as the worst design we have ever experienced. - In Taiwan, the UK (I ...

While we were having our snack in the piazza some friends stopped by and they were explaining to them who we were and that I was Lorenzo's american mother! la mamma americana is how they referred to me! Bologna, Italy chella... of day-trippers pouring out of the streets away from Piazza delle Erbe, and we somehow missed Verona’s most famous tourist spot, Juliet’s mythical balcony from that Shakespeare play, in the small amount of time we had to meander the streets. But we had to press on because dinner was waiting.
Heading westwards to Brescia and then making for Iseo (a town on a lake of the same name) without any real idea of where we were going, we were hampered ...

Back on the bus! This time to Italy!! We went to Pisa (and had pizza for lunch!) We saw the tower, of course, and the church. Got to shop in the souvenir shops and sit for awhile in the sun. Very peaceful day. I can tell I'm getting tired, because the travel journal entries are shorter and shorter!
