As we entered Santa Barbara we saw signs for ‘tourist information’ which was closed but fortunately had free maps of the town outside! Phew! We only had the address of the guy (George) that we were to crash with but he didn’t finish work until 10pm. Rachel had suggested we eat at the restaurant (where she used to work) called Scarlet Begonia, which all we knew was 2 blocks ...

... Ferry building for an early dinner before the Alcatraz night tour. I loved the ferry ride - we circled Alcatraz on the way there, and the city looked great from the water. It must have looked tantalizingly close to the prisoners. The buildings are certainly showing their age and huge restoration works are underway.

It's amazing how in just 2 days I've learned my way around and got the hang of the public ...

After our morning embracing nature, we are off to explore some man made attractions this afternoon. We manage to get back across the Golden Gate into San Francisco in time to make our tour of Alcatraz. We also get our first taste of the amazing California weather as it is raining on the Marin side of the Golden Gate, cloudy on the SF side, and sunny by the time we park near the wharf.
