... After some difficulty we finally managed to hail a taxi to take us back to the bus station, and we made it on to the late bus back to Chengdu.

So, onto the train journey. We booked a 4 berth "soft sleeper" carriage which we shared with 2 Chinese business men, who spent the first 6 hours talking loudly to each other non stop! They didn't speak much English but a Chinese girl in the carriage next door popped round and we were able to have a good conversation.
