You have to take the rough with the smooth when travelling and our journey to the Elqui Valley was definitely the rough. It did not bode well when arriving to pick the hire car up the less than helpful customer services adviser could not find our booking. My early observations are that the Chileans are to customer service what Basil Fawlty was to hotel management! When he finally found our reservation he added a load of "extra" costs and then informed us he didn't have a sat nav. ...

... eying up his selfie. Leaning into his ear, I quietly, asked him if he was taking the ****. Thankfully, he sheepishly returned his phone to the confines of his jacket pocket as he thought better of his actions. Moments later, the entire group was blinded, not by a supernova or a shooting star though, but by a simpleton who wanted to capture the stars on her fancy camera. The brilliant, bright, light resulted in a gasp of annoyance from the group and our retinas ...

... cancelled. People started being rerouted to other buses labeled with city names unknown to us. The attendant started crossing seats off of cryptic lists and with us not being able to communicate properly we were left standing there holding our bags and watching the chaos. Luckily this turned out to be the best course of action as eventually around 8:30 a bus with the words "La Serena 7:20" scribbled on the windshield in chalk pulled up and ...
