North Lake Road Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India, 643101, +91-423-2443834
As the Drago truck is still waiting a part a bus has been arranged to take us on. The replacement bus had obviously been in a scrape or two as it had cardboard for one window and the whole side of the bus seems to have been impacted and many other dents and dings. Inside many of the fittings were missing or broken. Ooty is located on a plateau high up in the mountains, so the last section of our drive consisted of a zig zag road going up the mountain with from memory 26 hair pin bends. At the...
Ooty, Karnataka, India ed.herweynenToday we finally reached Ooty. The bus ride from Mysore was interesting in the usual Indian sense of being a rollercoaster dance with death. Sometimes its better when its dark and you can't see what the stupid driver is doing! Also, we were once more involved in a minor scam as we were taken on a detour through a wildlife park - which meant the bus driver demanded extra money from each passenger for the park entry - which of course we never saw them get out and buy. The entry fee was only a d...

Ooty, India paulalisadunneOotacamund, or Ooty as it is known by everybody - people would think you are on drugs if you went about asking for Ootacamund, it was hard enough finding the bus to get to the place, as it seemed I was not putting the emphasis on the 'Oo' enough - is at 2200 m above sea level, much the same as Darjeeling, but the places could not be more different. Where Darjeeling had a predominantly Nepali and Tibetan culture, and seemed clean and fesh, Ooty was distrinctly Indian, and pretty much as dirty ...
Ootacamund, Tamil Nadu, India pmitchell1981... inside the car at that night giving as a feel we are at the middle of the jungle no lights, we dont know where is the route and how we have to proceed. Thank god at last we reached home only because of the tribe (now I understood tje importance of a guide). The most fun part is the local guy asked us to put on high beam to the maximum on top of the tree, he just wanted to ensure that no panther or cheetah sitting on the tree (earlier he had seen black panther twice sitting in one ...

Ideally this year’s graduating class will carry their distinctions into adult life, into the ‘different’ world, finding others like them and feeling empowered by who they are.

I met groups of parents and staff and students in the Alumni room of Lushington Hall, a meeting and lounge space devoted to memorabilia, trophy cases and bookshelves of school yearbooks and texts. The parents were particularly eager to sing the school’s praises (“We wouldn’t send our kids anywhere else, frankly” and “I wish I could have come here”) but the highlight was our session with the ...
I knew from the mountain drives in Malaysia that the next 2 hours were going to be a test of her nerves. Steep narrow roads and blind hair pin bends do not mix well with stiff old buses and Indian drivers. "Why don't you take a couple of your calmer downers Mum" I suggested, quietly thinking that I could do with popping one myself.

... the other drivers honk once every 7 seconds, Mohan honked 3 times. If the other drivers would lay on the horn and squeeze through the middle of the two lanes of the freeway, Mohan would lay on the horn and use the oncoming traffic lanes to make a pass. Basically, if I think about the top three wildest drives of my life: 1. With Jason to Waterloo 2. With Jason in Toronto 3. With Jason to the Pump "With Mohan to Bandipur" far and away takes number ...
