Exploring Mombasa with Soraya.

... and had a really nice evening.

On Wednesday we headed out to Bombolulu Market on the outskirts of the town. It’s actually a workshop that employs disabled people to make arts and crafts for the tourist trade and mobility aids for disabled people in the coast province. Soraya and I were given a tour of the various workshops where carvings, jewellery and leather goods were made and the garden centre where plants were being sold. The scheme has been ...

Lord I was born a rambling man....

... we worked at a campaigners camp for YL in Nairobi. It was cool to see that YL in Africa is just like YL in the states.

Now I'm in Mombasa for a few days. We are meeting daily with the YL leaders here, painting and fellowshipping with them. Our team is enjoying the ocean when we aren't working.

Sorry for the brief update - I'm late to meet the team (imagine that). Thanks for the prayers.

http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=48ljp0cYGcM

Time to wrap up and head home for me

... of the many thousands of tourists who visit Kenya each year looking for an adventure on Safari and then maybe a week at one of the few "luxurious!" hotel complexes and you stay clear of Mombasa, Nairobi and certainly don't stray into the villages; then I think you'll get your 4 grand's worth - especially for those tourists who have seen witnessed some cultural diversity across the world and are not too shocked by the scenes of hardship, poverty and ...

6 weeks in Mombasa!

I can't believe I've been in Mombasa for 6 weeks!!! Sorry for the lack of blogging - lucky I added the disclaimer about it before I left. Things here have been so busy but so great! I'm not really sure where to start to recap all that we've been doing....I think the last time I wrote was after Jessie and I went to Watamu beach and I had the sandal incident. That seems like forever ago. The club night outreach I wrote about ended up going pretty well. There ...

Dr Coco and Mother Theresa come to the rescue

... in fact, in many ways, it seems that fate has brought them to us. We met Theresa - who's husband died of AIDS. She lives 10 mins from the orphanage, and has promised to come and visit us. Ian - who has been coming to Kenya for the last 45 years -is heavily involved in Tumaini, and even knows Joan - the founder. And all the children are coming to the hotel we are staying at tomorrow. Unfortunately we leave tomorrow to join ...

Finally a new entry!!!!

... touched to hear peoples stories and began to grasp the effect of HIV in these peoples lives. I have also gained a completely new understanding of MCC and really love their programs. It is really cool to see that they are both culturally sensitive and effective. Before coming back to Nairobi we had supper at our friend Rose's house. It was phenomenal a traditional meal in her home. It was really neat I don't even have ...

Volunteering in Kenya

... had one ounce of stability in my life I would have adopted him in an instant. Although I spent a lot of time with each of the kids, I definitely favored Beal the most. The day I left I woke him up from his sleep to say goodbye. My heart sank when he opened his eyes, lifted his head and looked me right in the eyes as if to say, "go ahead and leave like the rest," before he laid back down and fell asleep. I really hope I can follow what happens ...

I felt the rains down in Africa...

... camping safaris in southern Africa. So if we are not doing a safari, then why are we in Kenya? Our ticket allowed us a low-cost stopover in Kenya so we opted to hit the coast and visit Mombasa before heading on to Zanzibar Island in Tanzania. We had just one day to check out the town but unfortunately it rained heavily for most of the day. During a short break in the downpour we did manage to wander a bit, sample the local Indian cuisine and see some of the old town. Most of the ...
