... to run the generators in the dry season but this proved to costly to operate and they abandoned the generating electricity about 10 years ago.

On to the "beach", however all the sand was covered with hundreds of umbrellas with tables, around which people were eating and having a great deal of fun and enjoyment. Since it was carnivale time all the 80 or so beaches around the island were packed.

Well we managed to stay away until 4.45am. I think it was the brandy we had at 3.30am that made us feel sleepy. We fell asleep on the sofas in the end. Was up at 5.25am and we left the hostel at 6am. Lots of time was passed asleep, which is good because we didn't reach our destination until gone midnight - yes, that's 18 hours driving. A VERY long day. ... it was fairly expensive in that sense.

Our hostel was effectively an old tennis club and so in typical Brazilian fashion the tennis court was replaced with an astro soccer pitch. It was in use every night by the locals but the general skill of the players didn't live up to the Brazilian reputation!

Literally no one we spoke to on the island (besides the tourist office) spoke English. So if you don't speak Portuguese ...

Day 1, Rio to Maresias

We left Rio at 8 am, to Barra da Tijuca via Av Niemeyer, and then all the way along the coast through a modern 6-lane highway to the densely populated town of Santa Cruz. Saturday morning traffic there was "horrendous", given that apart from the usual weekend beach goers this is also the end of the summer holidays and of Carnival week.
