Greetings from Bondi Beach! We have had a busy and fun first day here in Sydney. Except for me, everyone eventually fell back to sleep at dawn. I entertained myself by watching people on Bondi Beach from our hotel-room window (scores of runners, cyclists and swimmers before 6 am), and by reading Jay McInerney's new collection of short stories, "The Last Bachelor." He can definitely write, but his themes of post-9/11 angst, infidelity, and anger at his Nashville ex-wife are a little tediou...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia peterbairdGreetings from Bondi Beach! As we hoped, yesterday we got our circadian rhythms back on track, and had a tremendous and exhausting day in Sydney.India and I were both up early. In a major change to household patterns and trip protocol, I went out for a run before her. Our hotel (www.ravesis.com.au) is across the street from the center of Bondi Beach. I ran left (north) to the end of the beach, and then south along the coastal path to Tamarama and Bronte Beach. Brutally hot, even at 7:30, ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia peterbairdCREEPY BUT FAMOUS FACE Greetings from Bondi Beach!A Tallulah's suggestion, we spent most of today at Sydney's famous Luna Park. It is an amusement park located in North Sydney, just at the end of the Harbour Bridge, set magnificently right next to the water.Luna Park is old school. It was first opened in 1935, transplanted en bloc from a park in Adelaide, after being chased out by that city's residents. Adelaide's loss, I guess. In the intervening 73 years, Luna Park has been embroiled in...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia peterbairdG'day Mates - I am in Sydney, Australia! It was a long flight from South Africa but we got to fly on the upper deck, which was awesome! All of us are a lot jet-lagged, but we still had a great first day here. This morning we went for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Taronga Zoo with one of the zookeepers, Diane. She is in charge of the Australian mammals and she taught us a lot about what it is like to be a zookeeper, a super cool job. She has to do a lot of things every day, like feed them, w...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia zolabFirst, I forgot to say that when we landed in Sydney two days ago, I have now been to six of the seven continents!!! The only one left is Antartica - I can't believe it! I have also gone swimming in the Indian, Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, Aegean, and Tasman Seas - wow! Sydney is the place where real swimming started - I learned yesterday that Australians were the first people to do the freestyle crawl (they called it the "Australian crawl"). Australians seem to swim (or run or hike or b...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia zolabToday we went to Luna Park, which is the oldest theme park in all of Australia. It opened in 1935 and it is right under the Harbour Bridge (which was built in 1932, I think.) Some of the rides are even that old, but they are all in great condition (not like the ferris wheel in India!) After riding the carousel and the giant ferris wheel with Mom, Dad, and Lu, Dad and I went to ride some super fast rides. From the ferris wheel, we could see all of Sydney, including the Opera House, the Bridge,...

... proceed with some sob story culminating with him asking me for money, was about to say sorry mate but he continued.... I said this to some bloke last week, he frowns, but he didn’t seem to find it funny and decided to scream and swing his satchel at me, however he didn’t hold onto it hard enough and it flew threw the sky...and that campers was about it... my question is this, what was he trying to gain from this and was I supposed to swing something at him?
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia vesp_2000... actually turned into a very entertaining evening after we all turned into avid Rabbitohs supporters. In true British style we couldn't resist a trip to the races after finding out that the Sydney Cup day was on at Randwick Racecourse. It was a great spectacle seeing everyone make such an effort to dress up for the races. Outfits ranged from military uniform (it was Anzac day) to swimsuits with rara skirts and ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia willandluce... it easily. The hotel name was nicely integrated into the large neon beer sign hanging out front: VICTORIA BITTERS Heritage Hotel (No relation to the excellent Heritage Hotel's we stayed at elsewhere, it turns out ..) The bar tender served double duty as the reception clerk, and after peeling the slightly sodden pages of the guest register apart, he signed us up for a night in Room 16. We were a little dubious, but pretty ...
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia dfbca... sleepy stage
and sat fairly quietly in the corner for most of the evening. hard to
believe I can be that quiet right?
Day three - Not much to the
day really. I had a lovely time strolling around Newtown, taking pics
of street art and trying on dozens of dresses in the pursuit of an
couple of outfits for Shai's wedding in India in November (as the
chances of me finding anything in Thailand to fit me are slim being
that I'm bigger than a ...
