... Water Point, where the highest running water on the mountain can be found. From here The Saddle beckons until the paths rejoin at a point called Jiwe La Ukoyo, or 'pointed rock', at 4394 metres. After a rest here you have just two hours left to trek for the rest of the day. If you are looking for a less travelled route the right fork from Horombo Hut (eastern path) is steeper and rougher, but still walkable.
Meals included: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, 1 ...

On me dit ...

... like his pace was leisurely, we kept falling behind. At the market fish are piled high with salt to extract the water and then boiled in oil to preserve it. There was thick black smoke coming out of the open-air shelters. In places the smell was overwhelming, sort of fishy, sort of garbagish, salty, oily. We walked to the water and saw a variety of boats that are used for fishing. There are owners of boats and there are fishermen. They have agreements ...

on to Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the final leg of my African voyage. I have one full day here, and really I think that is a bit too long. There really isn't anything interesting to see here. Dar is a large noisy smelly city, much like Nairobi. Like many places, the beauty in East Africa is in the rural areas, not the cities. My day started at the internet café down the road from my hotel. I wanted to post some blog entries, check email and confirm my flights back ...

... needed the money more then we did so donated it for a prize for the next game - what a guy haha. 6 December Today saw us drive to Dar Es Salaam and in particular to Mikadi Beach. It was a scenic drive through the lush parts of Tanzania which more resembled a tropical forest with its palm trees and banana plantations throughout. The drive was mostly uneventful except for a stretch of road that had been pulled apart ...

... expect or how to react but after a few hours he was fine and he really enjoyed himself there. 15/10 - We went to school and I introduced the kids to the girls. The girls are normally at Buguruni from 8 to 3 then they both go to Dogodogo (another school which cares for street children in Dar). After they left, the kids and I decided to clear out the mess in the Art and Music room. 16/10 - I went to teach class 1, class 3 and 4. It was good because I went ...

2 days on the road

Today is a driving day. We spend a great part of the day driving from Arusha to Dar es Salaam - we stop overnight in a place called Tembo. During the drive we pass many villages and small pockets of homes. I'll describe a typical home. It is made from sticks and can only be as tall as the longest stick. They then layer over the sticks mud which then hardens and dries. The roof is generally made from branches, leaves, grasses. Very few have any type of window. Some of the newer ...

... Emmanuel, we depart with sincere promises to return the next day to help him dig and to participate in his sister's funeral. Back in our hotel, we sit in silence, unable to process the touching, horrible evening we've just experienced. Eventually, though, our hindsight focuses and a lucid overview of what has been presented to us allows us to walk away from this creep and his phoney situation without feeling any guilt. To recap: In Tanzania, when ...

... to the large number of muslims here that the Protein Pub is the only pub in downtown Dar! The next day we decided to get the boat across to Zanzibar - after finding out that the Egypt air office had closed 3 years ago and therefore we would have to wait until Nairobi to find out if we can change our homeward tickets to allow us to spend some time relaxing on a beach in Egypt before heading home.
