Back to Shore

... that was wrapped in a banana leaf and then grilled. It was doused in some sort of sweet/spicy sauce that was delicious. To drink we had basicall what was water mixed with coconut milk to make a kind of coconut water drink. Pretty good also. I didn't know what to do when I opened one larger banana leaf to find a whole cooked fish. I tried eating it, but after a mouthful of small fish bones I decided I'd just let the ...

... to go back to work.

Around 4pm the Russian and I got back in the van to return to KL. The other three were staying for 10 days to continue work (suckers). Two of them are brand new and the other had to stay back to train them. I was happy to return to the city. Took a prop job out of one of the smallest airports I've ever been to (I've been to a lot) and an hour later we were back.

The rest of the week has pretty much consisted of what was ...

A Stop Over in Pekan

... the town we jumped a bus back to the centre of town; a few moments after getting off the bus we realised that we had left our guide book back at the bus station. It felt like losing an arm! Catching another bus back out of town and managing to explain to the driver that we wanted to get off across from that particular bus stop (no mean feat!) we found to our relief that the book was ...

Redang Island

... Thirdly, we found a large fishing net on the sea bed, at approx 25 metres (76 ft) down, & there were giant moral eel, crabs & all kinds of fish entangled in it. So we decided to try & gather the net up & release the trapped marine life. Well, after ...

Jungle Train and Cherating

An early start for the 6.23 so called 'jungle train' from Khota Baru to Jerantut. The train goes past the edge of the Taman Negara National Park so parts of the journey were through jungle but parts were also through areas of deforestation, not the prettiest site. There were some really cute little villages and kids waving from their wooden houses and we did see a couple of monkeys. Its a really relaxing way to travel, if not the most ...

Day 142

... others were waiting (you always seem to get treated better for being a tourist, or white, or both). I explained that I needed the immunisations and he started writing on a form. Next to me sat a bloody-nosed elderly Malaysian who was also being served at the reception counter. The same form was being used for him too which didn't feel right - I looked down at my form and next to "Chief complaint" was a freshly written "FEVER". "No I don't have a fever, I need immunisations for ...

Kuantan Trip --- Sea Turtles Watching & Lake Chini

... gave him as a reward. For RM1, we could buy a coconut from the village chief to quench our thirst. As its reward, the monkey was treated to a huge coconut and it slurped happily away using a straw, just like us! Lake Chini was another place worth visiting, but once again, certainly not for those urban freaks. We took a motor boat to tour the lake. Lotus flowers were in full bloom as our boat moved along while our tour guide did the explanation. In the depths of the ...

Rain Forest Jungle Trek

... way into your socks and feast on your ankles. Our guide showed us many different species of fish in the rivers, most of which are almost extinct, except within the parks where they are successfully reproducing in numbers because of the ban on fishing. We didn't see too many larger animals today - crossed paths with an elephant about 100m away but couldn't see much other than trees shaking and branches breaking, I really wanted to pursue it but our guide talked us out of ...

Grotty Town!

... for dinner, we did however wash it down with a bottle of beer. Poor Matt had to wake up on his birthday on a ****** camp bed in possibly the worst guest house we have stayed in yet (worse then Singapore), so we were up at 6 am and couldn't wait to get outta there!! Think we were the only foreigners in town - think we know why!
