... replacement windows in lovely wooden Polish and Lithuanian houses.
The situation in Nepal is very much on our minds, and our thoughts go out to those involved. We are booked to travel there in about 10 weeks time, so await news from our agents and guides. We may not feel it appropriate even if it is possible, so are prepared to considerably change our route and plans if necessary. In the meantime it's off to Latvia tomorrow

Yesterday we arrived into Ignalina, NE from Vilnius in the Lithuanian lake district. We had tried to find out about accommodation in advance, asking our hostel hosts, and looking at the internet, but had not found anything very definite, apart from a hotel offering a double room at €47, which is rather more than we've budgeted. We tried the tourist office, but it was shut. Outside they had a helpful rack of leaflets, including guest houses ...

The entry for Daugavpils (Latvia's second biggest city) in my Lonely Planet is not even two pages long. It mentions that most Latvians will tell you never to visit this city in the East because it is ugly, dreary and there's nothing to do there. To be fair, most Ridznieki ("Rīgans") have never actually been in Little Moscow themselves, so they don't know what they are talking about.

Meanwhile, I am on a personal mission to visit all Four Corners of Latvia, ...

Crossed today the border to Latvia , as you can see on the pics, miserable weather.
Because a stretch of more then 20 km was under constant roadwork, one lane or the other was closed, which made it very challenging and with the wet, very dirty. (All 90 km ride)
